Post match: Nottingham Forest v Liverpool (EPL 2/3/24 3pm)

Interesting the use of Mark Clattenburg by Forest.
Essentially having a ref review a referees performance as part of post match presser…

Is it really about Nuno?
He was hired by the club.
Just wonder how long before the PL reacts to this or other clubs copy this

Keeps Clattenberg in hair transplants.

Like I bet he has never sat with the owner and go oh yeah actually not a pen you see.

Luton and Forest.

One of these clubs is embracing the challenge of staying in the division, building a narrative of adventure around their run in and playing with a genuine sense of joy and fun. They are focussing on what they can control, and while they are going to lose games, they are trying to enjoy themselves, and hopeful pick up a few points in the process.

The other one is adopting a victim mentality, and questioning everything that goes wrong as an act of deliberate vandalism against the club. They have hired an ex referee to try and pressure PGMOL, and have their owner involved in remonstrating with officials. They are actively briefing journalist about their perceived injustices and their fans are fully bought into this idea that they are uniquely being shafted by everyone around them.

One of these clubs is going down. Which one will in be?

I know which my money is on.

Can we just hire Paul Tierney on double his wages so he never refs us again? Put him on gardening leave for 10 years.

Some clarification regarding Clattenburg: He may be nominally employed by Forest but for all intents and purposes he’s an employee of its owner. A relationship that started 4 years ago when Clattenburg was appointed refereeing chief in the Greek Superleague, i.e. Marinakis. His role then was supposedly to bring about impartiality but in practice to make sure that favourable decisions by match officials would keep flowing Marinakis’ way. 2 years ago, the status quo was altered, when another club’s shady owner took control and Clattenburg was ousted.

Since then Marinakis and his minions have exhibited the same behaviour on every occasion their team in the Superleague did not win. It does not matter if there’s any valid argument to make or not. His standard course of action as long as he is not in control, is to question everyone and everything and to resolve to as much mudslinging as possible. So this is not Forest adopting a victim mentality, but its owner employing the same tactics that he does in Greece.

To be honest, I am suprised that he waited for so long before he started doing this with Forest as well, because in other respects, the way he runs both of his teams is identical. Make an abnormally high number of transfers, sack managers the minute they start falling short of his expectations and send players from one team to another through loans and sales.

Clattenburg, the perfect one… Just reminding how good he was, while they called him top referee…

I didn’t realise Mark Clattenberg is now an employee of Nottingham Forest? Nottingham Forest 0-1 Liverpool: Referee analyst Mark Clattenburg criticises officiating for Darwin Nunez winner - BBC Sport

I feel like that should be mentioned in the headline, not in the body of the article.

Referee analyst for Nottingham Forest.

We should install former Bundesliga referee Bibiana Steinhaus as our referee analyst.

Klopp gets along with her and she’s Howard’s Webbs wife now.

#howiescryptonite

It’s one more thing to add to the pot that will hopefully result in significant reform around refereeing.

The current level in the Prem is worse than I’ve ever seen. There appears to be little consistency with VAR. In some ways it is an excellent, factual addition, but in other ways it is way too slow, and misapplied. From a Liverpool pov we also seem to suffer with a lot more bad decisions, especially in relation to the quality and dominance of our play. Tomkins did a large piece on this.

Beyond those things we have seen referees go to the Middle East to top up their income. It doesn’t pass the sniff test though. It is likely a significant portion of their annual income, and the paymaster is ultimately the owner of a Premier League club, so impartiality is not upheld.

And now it looks like individual teams are employing referees, or prominent ex refs. It could be legitimate if it is part of the overall coaching set up at a club, to keep the players on top of the rules and how they will be applied, but in this instance it is PR, and Clattenburg is trying to set the narrative and pressurize the pgmol on behalf of the fat Greek fella.

There is loads I’ve missed out, but all the ingredients tell me that significant reform around refereeing can’t happen soon enough.

It’s not even a bad decision, it is a borderline one at best on its technical merit, but is one perfectly in line with the spirit of the law even if technically, forest may have had a touch outside the box before the whistle was made. This is why he made the same decision under similar circumstances in the first half.

The focus on this shows how broken football is becoming. There is not just an unwillingness to talk about actual football anymore, but the lack of perspective in distinguishing things a person is unhappy with vs things that were badly and consequently wrong means that we’re not having the sober conversations about the genuine things that need to be done to addressing the rules and everything around the officiating that needs to be done to make the game better.
