Post match: Southampton v Liverpool (EPL 24/11/24 2pm)

Same with the shite of cutting holes in the back of the socks, what a crock of shite

yep, but at least thats just generally tardy and ugly…i agree with clamping down on it, as i do with untucked shirts etc etc…

but the lack of an appropriate shin guard is really a safety issue

Totally agree, I was a prison officer working in the gyms and we had to provide shin pads for 5 aside games due to health and safety

Well if he doesn’t have a medical reason accompanied by a doctors note, excusing him from wearing shin pads, and if they are compulsory… then the officials, who have a duty of care to all players (or should have), are clearly negligent in their duty… which is typical of the poor standards they display on a weekly basis

" Why doesn’t Jack Grealish wear shin pads?

Since he was young player, Grealish felt that high socks limited his ball control ability. Today, he wears tiny shin guards designed for youth players, and rolls his socks down so they barely cover his shin guards.2 Jan 2021"

When did shin pads become compulsory in football?

The History of Shin Pads | Personalised Shin Pads

1990s

In fact, the use of shin pads in football was not widespread until the mid-20th century, and even then, there were some players who refused to wear them. It wasn’t until the 1990s that FIFA, the international governing body of football, made it mandatory for all players to wear shin pads during matches.

Just watched the whole game. We dominated possession and chances both halves, but gave away two stupid goals. No idea how their penalty was given, but the whole build up to it was very sloppy. Bradley most to blame for the second. Why try to cover Armstrong when he’s got two other defenders near him?
The full back situation is concerning. Dreading Bradley and Robbo facing Real on current form. Darwin had one of his off days, I hope we go with Diaz central against Madrid.
Like everyone else, I just don’t understand why Salah hasn’t been signed yet. It’s becoming very annoying.

Maybe that both Full backs have more defensive responsibility against Real, so hopefully no issues

I came on here to talk about how this was a glorious morning but I am too a bit curious about shin guards currently.

Like as a gay male I’m not complaining and it looks left scruffy that the ripped socks. Like surely if the issue is restricting socks then perhaps they can discuss this with the technology makers?

I think they just can’t be arsed using tape.

There is no regulation style of shin guards, so those ridiculous barely there types are allowed.
Pointless if you ask me.

Ah, our first real test

It’s almost like we haven’t played the two other top 4 teams.

I’m overjoyed with the 8 point gap but…whichever team Slot puts out seems to suffer from a collective tactical amnesia in the first half of too many of our games. It must be driving the coaching staff mad. Against the top sides we could find ourselves two goals down at half time, and even a Slot team talk masterclass would have a job getting us out of such a hole.

The other elite teams seem to spread any good play around much more evenly, but with us it’s become a depressingly regular occurrence; struggle in the first half, recover in the second. I mean it can’t be just US that opposition go at 150% - every game - in the hope of getting something from the match. Arsenal Madrid and the cheats for example; they seem to dominate opponents from the off. So why can’t we?

Thoughts?

Yeah Man City were evenly bad throughout their game.

Hasn’t the issue been with us and sluggish starts for at least a couple of years.

Then there are games we have started well this season but dropped after about 30 mins before picking up.

We’ve been sluggish for the post international game for years now. And sometimes it isn’t being sluggish it’s just we haven’t done much.

I remember with Bredon Rodgers that we always came out all guns blazing and “blew teams away”, which is fine until someone parks the bus and then you have worn yourself out after 60 minutes.

I do wonder whether the international break makes a difference. How many of Southampton’s players were playing internationals compared to us? Robbo looked spent and one or two others weren’t at their best.

I suspect that Slot will be unhappy that we didn’t keep it tight at the back rather than a sluggish start as such.

Is he still in the recovery process from his injury? I wonder if Tsimikas would have started instead if not for the knock.

I suspect that was the plan. Slot has probably picked up on the fact that Robbo plays too much football. Maybe he could be convinced to retire from Scotland after the Nations’ League play off?

Another thing with those is it does without our best midfielder in Maca and our second best forward in Diaz most times. Kind of glad they are getting a week and a half in Liverpool now.

Flying out to Madrid after flying back from Brazil a week before would have been meh.

I believe this happens in the busy periods where we are playing 2 hard games a week and no time to train or recover properly then you add the international breaks where most of our players are picked for their respective countries. Our best players who form the spine of our team most of them are captains for their teams where they have to have to show commitment and even then they get singled out for heavy criticism. Notice that the countries that are sensible enough manage our players by pulling them out early or in the case of Salah didn’t get picked at all as Egypt have already qualified for the AFCON finals.
Notice all the ones who played over 90 mins in both games are the ones that looked knackered yesterday and Salah was running like a spring chicken.
As long as UEFA and FIFA keep on creating more ways to kill these players without a single thought for their welfare it will get worse for everybody. If we come out unscathed at the end of December will be a miracle.

In rugby VAR would have corrected the ref’s mistake. But in football - no.
