Thing is with 10 minutes to go you might not get another goal it’s more likely than not you won’t, it is more how we react rather than scoring again.
I think Maddison knew if he performed some wank dart celebration when his team were still losing he’d have looked like a right dickhead.
I maintain that any PL team, regardless of how the match has panned out to that point, is still in the game if they trail by 2 goals with the best part of a quarter of an hour to go however unlikely it seems.
I would say they were in the game at 2-1.
I kind of think even though I went for a cup of tea at 5-3 that the game was probably ok.
Yeah our third goal killed the game
Kulusevski is a good player, I could see him at a club like Bayern Munich in future.
Didn’t get to see the game and I forgot my phone so saw absolutely nothing until FT - which did take me a couple of seconds to compehend the scoreline.
From the highlights, and everyone’s reaction, it looked like we were absolutely superb. Sure Spurs grabbed a couple late in the game but that does happen sometimes when a game is too easy. Did Jones come on as a 6? Looked to me like he didn’t do enough to cover defensively on the 2d and 3rdn goals, while Gomez could have worked quicker to get back into the centre in both too and obviously Robertson got beat in the air too easily in the 3rd.
Anyway I don’t mean to over-analyse, the game was a tricky one on paper and we turned it into an absolute cakewalk. Looks like Szoboszlai was at his best, which we don’t see enough, but when he is his quality is up there with anyone.
I think I know why Salah remains underappreciated, or outright disrespected by others (not even nominated for FIFA Player of the Year is astonishing) but I think its that he has a style that he just goes and delivers a 2 goal, 2 assist game - probably the best return that many players will ever get in their lives - and he makes it looks so routine, so casual. Slot has really given him a new lease of life, I don’t see why he would slow down now. Slot seems intelligent enough to keep adjusting to his needs as he ages, but right now he looks sharper and faster than ever.
Gives something for people moan about.
After all it’s a pretty difficult time for “notasuperfan” and the like.
Thoughts and prayers.
As opposed to normal situation when he looks…a right bellend
I know you Don’t like Joe, but to mention him in 2 of the goals and not Virg is blinkered beyond belief as Joe was excellent against Spurs in all facets.
I don’t know what you mean by “I know you don’t like Joe”. I’ve been one of Gomes’ biggest fans on here for years especially as a CB, however I have been critical of his performances at CB in recent years as he been terrible in a lot of those games. This season his performance at Newcastle cost us two points, along with Kelleher’s mistake. He deserves criticism where he makes errors. You are right though van Dijk was shit on those goals too (and I only mentioned Gomes in relation to one goal).
My reason for highlighting him getting too wide is mostly for the 3rd goal where he sets off at a full sprint to go out and cover the double team on Trent down the wing - leaving a three v three in the penalty area.
When the ball is kicked by Solanke he is still not recovered into his position because I think he got too wide in the first instance. He was right to try and come over a little bit but he goes too far, trying to close down the poass before it happens rather than after, and creates a gaping hole in the middle of defence.
It’s not that Gomes is a bad defender, he’s obviously a very good one, but maybe after years of moving between CB, RB and LB he isn’t quite as tactically astute as you would hope when playing central areas. In my opinion he played that situation like a RB does not a CB and then he didn’t recover back across to be in a position to influence the defending.
Anyway my bigger point was that I thought Jones, another player I’m probably higher on than most people, didn’t play well defensively after he came on. He’s close to both the 2nd and 3rd goals but doesn’t seem to have the instinct to react to either one. He came through the system as a winger, moved to an AM under Klopp and many think his future could be as a DM but he clearly has a way to go. I think Endo, for example, would do a better job of tracking Kulusevski’s run from midfield or tracking the back post run (that didn’t end up getting used) on the 3rd goal.
Didn’t really mean to get bogged down on the defensive display though, as I said it’s the kind of thing that can happen when you are in a game that is just too easy.
Think some of us are on autopilot about blaming Robbo atm…
Who is Gomes?
Larry, I believe
Or maybe our very own (if you are English) Adilson Angel Abreu de Almeida Gomes. Not sure which bit is on the shirt though.
Autocorrected
Apologies on thinking you mentioned the 2nd and 3rd goals in relation to Joe, just re-read it, hard day yesterday and early morning rise.
I do disagree with the 3rd, if Joe doesn’t cover over it is a simple ball in behind to Werner and that is a large distance to recover quick enough to get back in the centre.
I agree on not focusing on the the goals we conceded, although I have mentioned minor errors from players but also Spurs did everything right in those situations as well.
You have been vocal on here against Joe as CB, but to mention him after his complete performance yesterday did seem churlish he didn’t put a foot wrong from what I saw and his calmness in possession was excellent.
I know it was only single mention in regards to Joe, but I normally see you sometimes as a voice of reason and actually thought you might have had praise for his performance yesterday.
I didn’t see the game so I couldn’t talk about his general play and obviously going off the highlights it just shows the goals, so I’m not able to praise it today unfortunately because I didn’t see it.
You are correct though I don’t view him as a CB thesedays, more of a RB who can do a short term job at CB when needed. I get worried about him playing CB for an extended period but we can get away with it for individual games here and there. I think the longer he plays at CB the more flaws come into his game - I have a similarly unpopular view on Kelleher. Endo if he was starting would be in that club as well.
Ultimately these are squad guys, very important but getting to a situation where we rely on them makes me nervous.
Gomez had a great game and could have been motm. Was cool and calm, tidied up everything that came his way and was good on the ball.
If he played like that every game he’d be pushing Konate for his place.
My concern with him is consistency. You can’t be sure that he’ll play as well next time out, but let’s hope so.
