Tierney’s explanation of the Jota incident explains why VAR didnt overrule it. It’s an example of how the commitment to avoid refereeing the game means when the ref sees it correctly but just comes to a dumb conclusion with the right information, it limits VAR’s ability to overrule it.
Had he thought the defender got the ball, VAR could say “that’s wrong…have another look and rethink it.” If the ref says something as dumbfuck as that about not what he saw but how he interpreted that, VAR cannot do anything.

You’ve answered it implicitly - Prem refs are shit

Sigh…there are a few things we need to talk about.
-
Robertson. Scores a goal but did something so so silly. There was absolutely no need to clatter into that lad there. He is going nowhere.
-
Mane. His form is very worrying. Needs to find a way to change up his play.
-
Tyler Morton. This game is a tad too early for him. It is not easy for a young lad to play in a very hostile stadium.
-
Milner. He still has the experience but the flesh is not willing anymore. Let’s hope today is just due to him needing to coach Morton.
-
That new GK coach. It is kind of worrying that Ali has been coming off the box so often and is becoming more hesitant in claiming the ball. Is this due to the new GK coach??

The refereeing standards in the BPL has gotten so darn low that even the usually supportive commentators are puzzled by a few big decisions. BPL being one of the highest profile leagues in the world generates a lot of buzz and pride for England. Not having any English referees in the World Cup 2022 will be the biggest slap to PGMOL. The irony would come a full round when the originator of the modern game will not be able to officiate any of the WC games.
-
Covid-19. The FA has to do something about the low double jabs rates in the league. How can the FA do more to protect the players??

It’s not Dremmler on Howard Gayle in Munich '81 territory though, is it?

when u have robbie savage in your corner, then u know shit is shit for real
we are the architects of our downfall , Naïve game plan and what happened was very predictable . very lucky that we didnt lose the game . same as newcastle first half conte read the script but did it with 2 players rather the one in newcastle game
The ref is one of the worst in the premier league not that there are good refs in premier all are overrated but this one is a real useless one .

We tried to play our midfield in the usual way, but they are playing together for the first time.
Klopp should’ve set Milner and Morton to both protect the defence, and keep it simple rather than the high press. Spurs’ chances were just from direct to Son/Kane, with midfield runners.

Overall a bad day for us:
- general play was not fluent… not enough movement, passing, first touch was off and thus difficult to break them down when they had men behind the ball
- Press didn’t work today. Against City we often drop back a bit deeper than usual due to their ability on the ball and to pass out of a press. Today while we did win the ball alot, they were able to find a free man a couple of times and release Son/Kane/Alli behind our defence many times. I think this was partly due to having a slow Milner and inexperienced Morton starting the game (due to our illness/injury situation)
- I know many on here are raging at the referee but honestly we scammed our 2nd goal (should have been a handball) and Spurs could have won the game 5-1. They got in behind our defence so often and had many good chances.
All in all a draw is a decent result for us given our play wasn’t as good as it should have been. We need to reinforce in Jan if we want to keep up with City.
The whole situation stinks.
The situation before the game itself and everything surrounding it. We’d have smashed them if we had two of our six missing, we’d have smashed them if they had to play last week.
I’d usually say excuses excuses but why are us and Chelsea playing on 2 day tests with more than 5 players lost to Covid and Man City getting 5 days.
I really hope they deprive the PL and Sky of their games this Christmas because frankly I’m done with it for now.

Arm against his body, then went into second phase. New rule in place as well. So I disagree with your assessment.

Tsimikas missed an opportunity to square it to Salah for the winner. Cross it in first time to Salah and bang!

We couldn’t press because we can’t rotate because we’ve lost 5 players to Covid.

“Mr Tierney told me Diogo [Jota] stops on purpose because he wants the foul. First and foremost if you want to shoot you have to stop because you cannot do both."…Klopp

A press gone wrong exposes your CBs to being isolated against runners. It’s the tactics that have seen us win a league title and CL. But in a gme like with a kid and 2 other midfielders who dont have game sharpness meant we were off. Some people will say that we should adapt by changing our approach, but as soon as you start second guessing yourself about not pressing because you’ve lost confidence in it then it falls apart badly.

100%. I don’t think we are talking about this enough. Missing Fab, Hendo, and Thiago. Instead starting Millie and Naby, who themselves are working back from injury, along with an inexperienced teenager.

Our midfield has Tyler Morton, James Milner and Naby Keita.
The plan was for Morton to hang on as much as he can, Milner to ping long balls and keep things tidy, Keita to try those riskier balls.
Morton was bamboozled the entire game. You can see he was not used to the intensity. His positioning is not the best as well.
Milner was the most disappointing among the three. His passes were so awry, he couldn’t control the midfield and his positioning is no better than Morton.
Keita is keita. It is obvious he cannot fit in a midfield 2 but there we go!

Klopp speaking sane sense as usual. Saying if Andy had his foot planted, it would be broken. A violent challenge all the way.
Regardless of what story the ref association will concoct, it was a dangerous challenge, which could be looking at a long injury if circumstances was slightly different.
