Post match: UCL Atletico Madrid v Liverpool (UCL 19/10/2021 8pm)

Seems like Klopp has torn that chapter out of his coaching manual this season. He’s replaced it with the previously discarded pages from circa 2017.

A goal up and in the 89th minute? Of course, we should send the cavalry up to makes runs into the box, and be content with leaving 2 v 2 at the back.

Still, makes for a helluva game.

He should have at least fouled Felix

Fortunately the Ref was in good form. They did get away with a couple of con tricks to win fouls, the Suarez/ VVD and the Trippier /Milner stand out to me , but they failed to win a pen through cheating. A tough game for anyone to stand out in but good, workmanlike performances all the same. Keita was looking good in their half but a disaster in ours.
Atleti also had the advantage of not having to play at the week end, a gift from the La Liga officials who clearly like to give their team every chance to win, unlike the EPL.
Interestingly, this morning, the game did not get a mention on the Spanish news we watch

Hattrick by me. Fell asleep during all three of our CL games so far. Not because they were boring but because job is killing me at the moment. Hate those late kick offs.

It’s proper weird isn’t it… Rather than take the sting out of a game we up the pace, turn it over then get smashed on the counter.

A big part of me thinks Van Dijk is concentrating so much on his game he’s not ordering everyone around as he used to.

The ref completely bottled it with Mane. JK should really highlight that before the next game. They are scared of Sadio so they get rough on him and when the fouls aren’t punished they get tougher.

I thought we were going for the third to kill the game and if a few connections happened we almost could have been up 3-0. Kind of like what happened with Milan at Anfield. But you’re right, seeing their attacking thrusts, we should have doubled down defensively for a bit and then try to hit them on the break.

You said we “have too many passengers in midfield”. I pointed out we are on our best unbeaten run in decades and have scored 30 goals in the last 9 games. So evidentially you’re being overly negative.

Klopp doesn’t allow passsengers. The closest we had to one last night got hooked at half time (though still contributed a cracking goal beforehand)

Didnt see the game as was at Orient but when I got in I watched highlights.
We cruised to 2-0 then our heads fell off. VVD was poor and I think that will happen every now again as to me he still isnt 100%.
Madrid full of their usual shithousery tactics and thanks to Alisson we kept ourselves in it.
I do laugh when the likes of football genius Joe Cole says - well LFC had to rely on their keeper tonight - yes, that’s why we paid nearly £70m for him you twat. He did say he thought we could win it so ill let him off.
But we regain ourselves and get the win and are basically through thanks to Milan winning.
Brave of the ref to overturn the pen and give a Red card. My mate said it was harsh - its not - his foot is nearly 7 foot in the air.

Unbeaten run or not doesn’t change the fact that our midfield at times have been very poor on and off the ball. Brentford match we had no control offered from the midfield despite going ahead twice. City first half in particular our midfield was non existent. We dropped 4 points on this unbeaten run after losing one goal leads on four occasions. So evidentially you need to look further than the unbeaten run.

And Klopp doesn’t allow passengers, well he probably has to when he doesn’t trust the alternatives or we have injuries to key players in the same area.

You say I’m being overly negative, I obviously don’t agree. I say there’s an issue there that will hurt us (and it has already in the two games I mentioned above) and Henderson has been a constant in that issue.

I believe you need to look at performances despite the result and seek improvements especially when there is a glaring drop in performance in a vital area.

Not sure if this is true or not? Anyone know if he doesn’t normally shake hands or is it only when he loses?

Simeone explained the incident as a mere miscommunication, as he generally doesn’t do handshakes after matches.

“I never shake hands after a match, because I don’t like it," he said. "It isn’t healthy for either the one who wins or the the one who loses. That’s the way I see it.

"But now when I see him I will shake his hand without problem.”

Them crying and whinging about the officials makes it sweeter. It would probably feel even better if they actually had something genuine to complain about. Shower of cunts from the touchline to every man on the pitch.

That said, it wasn’t the best viewing for Liverpool fans. Sometimes, we were so much at sea defensively that all you could do is close your eyes and prey. Both their goals were hair-pulling stuff. And while questions will be asked about certain individuals, like Keita, the fact is that we are not defending correctly as a group and have not for a while now. It may not be obvious against run of the mill PL sides but against quality opposition we are getting easily exposed. It may be thrilling for the neutral but I’d very much prefer if we started exerting more control in our matches again. We looked chaotic at times and we need to quickly improve in this regard.

But for now we can celebrate for beating these horrible bastards on their ground. We have more coming up on Sunday, so let’s keep it up.

Brentford?

I wouldn’t classify Brentford as an average team.

I’ve watched half of our Porto match and half of our Milan match.

I had the flu jab and it just knocked me out last night, though judging the time my head hit the pillow we were probably scoring our second.

Don’t you? Well 30% of their total number of goals were scored in that one game. I think we were poor defensively that day. I suspect Brentford will end up well down the table…

Yet they outplayed the team at the top of the table that have spent without restraint this last summer.

As for AM and the knee I’ve never liked them as club and it’s hard to care much for them above the other two in Spain.

Stems from 2014 when this was going on

I suppose they got rid of the obvious signs but when they boo the knee it’s evidently lingering.

Yes, Atletico would then have had 20 players on the pitch. So, I have to agree, we would’ve been in trouble.

Did you see what they did to a Chelsea specifically set out to nullify them? They were hanging in for dear life at the end. Also Brentford should have had a penalty
