Post Match: Villa v Liverpool (EPL 4/10/20 7.15pm)

…and get sent off.

You forget that martin (tw)atkinson was the ref and jon “fatboy” moss was on VAR, neither of whom ever give us the benefit of the doubt e.g. two goals scored following marginal offsides; fourth goal scored from free kick taken from wrong position etc. etc.

It was bad enough with 11 men on the field; can you imagine what the scoreline would have been if we’d been reduced to 10 men?

A hard fault does not mean a red card. Yes, Atkinson was the ref who missed the clear fault on Salah in the box but sometimes you have to put your foot down and say, no way you will humiliate me because that is what happened. Gerrard would have made such a statement and I expected Fabinho or Milner would do the same, I was wrong.

We played like a bunch of schoolboys trying to win the Fairplay cup.

…and got sent off.

Do you recall 22.03.2015, playing manure:

Gerrard was brought on at half-time and was sent-off by martin (tw)atkinson for a stamp on Ander Herrera just 38 seconds after coming on in a game Liverpool lost 2-1.

Yes that could have happened too or not.

Remember it well, I was at that game. If it was me, I would’ve done a proper job on Herrera, horrible little turd.

When Milner came on he looked our best player. A true professional.

Had Allison been there the defence would have had more confidence and been better organised consequently playing a lot better. Had this conversation with a Villa supporter yesterday. We both felt that had Alli and Mane been playing it would have been very close.

Bob Paisley said: “A lot of teams beat us, do a lap of honour and don’t stop running. They live too long on one good result. I remember Jimmy Adamson crowing after Burnley had beaten us once, that his players were in a different league. At the end of the season they were.”

… and how would the inclusion of Alisson affected our midfield, who were toothless in defense?
Granted Mané would have helped there, as I have said before.

This idea that somehow VVD becomes a quivering wreck when Alisson isn’t in goal just doesn’t ring true with me. He has big enough shoulders I feel.
However Alisson is a better goalkeeper better with his feet, better one on one better at diving to his left and at judging crosses, that’s why he’s our n°1 goalie.

I think so too. We should remember that when we broke the transfer record for him, it wasn’t just because he’s a great defender. It was also because he has the ability to organise the whole defence and lead on that area of the pitch.

There was very little of that on display on Sunday night.

Still gobsmacked by this result and kept away for a couple of days to get my head around it before putting in my 2 penneth.

Firstly it was a shit show all 11 need to take the blame for,we play as a team, win as a team and lose as a team,no point singling out certain players as the whole team let everyone down and errors were made all over the pitch.

If you look at how we play, each player is a cog in a well oiled machine, when part of it fails,it all fails (admittedly it shouldn’t collapse the way it did sunday night). For our system to work we need to press at the right time in numbers, when Mane is missing from the front, keeping Villa’s defence pinned back and Hendo/Milner marshalling the midfield and keeping everyone on their toes, these guys are sorely missed,we can lose one or 2 but not have all 3 and have numerous players have an off game at the same time, led to this result,we didn’t have anyone in midfield to boss it,our team became disjointed, our defence played too high, our forwards and midfield didn’t make tackles and press properly, which enabled Villa to bypass our midfield with ease and take advantage of our high line defence.

My main concern was that even though we had our main back 4 playing and VVD incharge,we didn’t have the intelligence to stop playing the high line and go back to basic’s or change the way we were playing to stop Villa’s onslaught.I’ll give them credit as they did a job on us but we didn’t help ourselves either, hopefully this result will be the kick up the arse we need to push us on,kinda like the Spurs 4-1 loss a few years back.

I believe that his consistent injuries since arriving is holding him back big time. Afraid to get stuck in and make those tackles.

Entirely possible I guess. Something wasn’t right the other night. Yes, credit to Villa for attacking that right side but we were not right in many areas. Midfield and the majority of the back line in particular.

Part of me thinks that selection was part of the issue for this one. With hindsight starting with Keita, Gini and Fabinho just didn’t work. Why? I’m a bit lost to be honest

Man what a horrible time to have an international break with this result looming over us. It’s going to be a big job to get Adrian and the defence confident and ready for the derby in the right turnaround time when everyone is back. I don’t know what happened, I had an out of body experience, not sure it was real. The thing that got me was how leggy everyone looked, like the first team had played a massive champs league game a couple days before. As others have suggested I wonder if there is a mental strain in the squad with illness going around or something else we haven’t heard about. Huge pressure on the Everton game now, when in reality it’s a game we can except a draw for as we have the last couple seasons. I expect Klopp to set up very defensively.

still not over that very shocking game , and I feel it might take more time than I expect to accept the result. can’t believe our players had it in them to be so very passive (and that’s putting it mildly)
still crying like a baby, the hurt is not going away WHY?

Why?

Because we had our pants pulled down by a team that will be scraping to stay in the league.

Can lose 3-1 even 4-1 and live with it

7-2 is next level

If we feel this bad imagine how the players and staff feel.

Expecting a serious response v Everton

Pride needs to be restored

I think I’d have been more upset at 4-1. 7-2 just made me laugh.

We’ll be fine. This is a team that has only lost four games in two years. That doesn’t just stop overnight.

I doubt that to be honest. They’ve made some good additions and if they can keep people fit they’ll be top half.

I don’t want to pretend that they’re better than they are to somehow diminish the result, they are many levels below us and the result was embarrassing, but there’s no chance they’ll be scraping for survival this year.

I’m still numb from it to be honest.

The international break is good and bad I think. First it allows Henderson and Thiago the time they need.
Downside it is Everton who have stepped up and we get naff all time to prepare again.

To be fair they looked half decent and they will definitely be better over the course of the entire season I think. So far there are definitely worse teams in the league by some margin. United for example.

I know it’s early days, but Fulham and West Brom look doomed, and from the rest of the pack I don’t fancy West Ham, Burnley or Newcastle’s chances.

I’m pretty sure that when the conversation about who is going down starts to develop, Villa won’t be in it.
