Maybe so, but I could’ve scored that header.
It’s shite at the moment but we ripped up a winning team and did two years of transfer business in one summer.
Feels like Slot was able to ride the Klopp wave using most of the same players and a slightly dialed down version of his tactics. Now with two new full backs, Mac struggling for fitness and two new forwards it looks like we’ve lost our identity and cohesion. Not to mention trying to work out how to fit a new creative fulcrum into the side.
I don’t know what gets us out of this but the players are better than the sum of their parts right now and that’s what Slot needs to get sorted.
Get Robbo in for Kerkez for a bit. Just rest Macca until he’s actually fit. The special treatment for Mo needs to stop and Ekitike needs to lead the line until Isak is actually fit. Also time for the senior leadership group to start holding each other and the team to account. Get the standards back to where they need to be.
I totally agree
Salah has been gash since agreeing the new contract. Sure he’s not a spring chicken anymore but he should be doing so, so much better.
I’m fucking gutted now that we didn’t get Zubimendi. That’s where our big problem is , defensive midfield. For all of Grav’s qualities he doesn’t marshall the defence and can’t pass out.
Our summer spending spree looks like a bad joke now. Ekitike the only one who’s shown his worth , and why spunk all that money on Wirtz with no clear plan on how to utilise him ?
It’s real back to the drawing board time now before we’re out of contention.
When a team’s struggles extend to this point, then you’ve got to start looking at the manager. Slot had plenty of evidence of our defiencies thus far, and it doesn’t look like he’s found any answers. It’s absurd.
Utd got a bit lucky today but defensively, we are shocking and I think Alisson saves the first goal. Plenty of chances not taken by us. The worst thing for me was, I had to watch the game with two bluenoses.
Isak is match fitness you don’t get that sat on the bench.
I have a growing doubt that somehow the model that Slot is reaching towards looks like Wenger’s Arsenal circa 2011. Lots of possession, not as ponderous as a few years before, but chronically unable to turn that possession into good scoring opportunities while being prone to defensive lapses.
They played Casemiro in midfield for an hour, the same guy who gifted us two goals at OT last year. Should have done a lot more to test him.
Not much movement on the pitch either…
Zubi isn’t that great defensively but his passing at the base is what we miss, but that is also down to Macca being off form
I usually am positive before the game and will be again before the next one, but this was so disappointing. I can’t see any positives except maybe the subs were the players trying to do something and if Slot really wants us to get back to form, they need to start next league games. But otherwise disaster. Oh and shambolic referring as always but lot to retrospect on ourselves.
- Why are we not starting Ekitike when clearly he’s the best forward right now.
- Why do we keep starting Salah and then play him this away from the goal.
- Why were both MacAllister and Dom playing as 9 (not even false 9) the entire game till subs.?
- Why can’t Robbo start a few games over Kerkez?
- Who’s our first choice RB? If it’s Bradley, are we always going to sub at RB every game? If its Frimpong why can’t he get a game?
- Why do we keep moving Dom every game?
- Chiesa and Jones might be inconsistent but given their form, why can’t they start any games?
- Why can’t Wirtz start when he’s clearly head and shoulders above our current midfielders?
- Why are we so bad at set pieces both while attacking and defending?
I am still a believer. I still believe we can get it right and Slot has enough goodwill in the bank to have us him support in some bad times. But we have looked confusing. He needs to get it right and fast even if we are considering this a transition season.
And played 180 minutes on International duty.
As I said if this team is to turn it around it will take months. I’m not sure what Slot is thinking but one thing I don’t want to see this week is one of those articles where they say “we have to do better”, show it don’t fucking talk about it.
Gakpo did at least look like the break helped him, not sure anyone else can say that.
Only thing I’ll say for Slot is the subs made a little more sense than some kind of patch work silliness against Chelsea.
Problem with that is we haven’t a fucking clue who they are week to week.
Frimpong is clearly a winger/ right sided midfielder. Leverkusen somehow conned us into believing he is a right back. He did put in two magnificent crosses, which should’ve been converted into goals.
Slot persisted with the same lineup as the last league game and had yet another defeat.4 in a row this time. Frankfurt might beat us at this stage. I’m afraid that this is all on Slot now with Giovanni giving him all the shit advice.
How is it fucking possible that all our players bar for Isak performed so well in the internationals, only to give a tepid performance at Anfield?
Slot will need to explain the following :
- What the fuck is being done at the training sessions where we are absymal in set-pieces, be it defending them and attacking them? The build up play is horrendous as well!
- Why is he persisting with an out-of-form Macca who incidentally got in the way of VVD, nearly tripped VVD and allowed United to score early?
- Why is he allowing one of the tallest player in the team i.e Gakpo to be taking the corners instead of being in the mix or blocking the GK’s view??Gakkers wasn’t even a renowned corner taker in the first place!
- Why is our wide forwards i.e Gakpo and Salah are so wide and are not going in and around the 6 yard box, feeding off or feeding our CF? Salah and Gakkers were absolutely brilliant last season doing just that?
- Why is Isak still starting the match and lasting so long on the pitch despite not having any pre-season at all? Why bench Eketike when his form is way better?
- Why is he not allowing Szoboszlai to play CM in the place of Macca when Szobo had a great time there when he was there and is needed for the legs in the midfield? What a waste of his athleticism!
- Why is he persisting with Bradley as a starter when Bradley’s only strength is his stamina and performs better as an impact sub? Why is Frimpong not given another chance?
- Linking back to point 4. Kerkez is so much better swinging in crosses like a younger version of Robbo. By making the forwards so wide, it doesn’t help our full-backs to provide the width. Just look at Kerkez when he is inverted vs far wide and just look at Frimps fizzing all the low crosses from wide…
- The AM conundrum. Wirtz needs time to get used to the speed of the league and Slot does that by leaving him on the fucking bench so long against a team who is gonna sit deep and counter. Even if Wirtz doesn’t play, there is still Chiesa who by the way assisted Gakkers or even Curtis Jones can play.
This team is not gonna win anything this season if the performance don’t improve. There might be a danger this team may not make it to UCL spots next season and that might be it for Slot where the management might just let Slot’s contract expire naturally.
I had the Inter game in December in mind, where I’d hope to see more dominant, consistent performances. The worrying thing for me right now is that from August to October, it’s been dire, a continuation of the last third of last season (which I put down to having pretty much sealed the league).
Do I think we’ll get better over the next 2 months? After today’s performance and our setup, I’m not that confident of saying we will.
