Interesting that we already played 9 times against Arteta as manager.

5 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat.

In Arteta’s first match against us in 2020.

And yeah, the Community Shield actually makes it 5-2-2.

We lost 2-1 at the Emirates just after we won the league IIRC. We battered them that game too.

Yeah probably one of the most one sided defeats, didn’t we hit the woodwork about 3 times, I remember our chance rate being silly and they scored with two errors

Haven’t we always done this? Even before Klopp took over we were sparking them. Who can forget 4 up inside 20 mins.

Does Klopp bear hug them on the way off the training pitch or something?

He’s been busy drafting his follow up post about not helping Dane fix his phone since Sept 2019. We’re about 2/3s done now, and like GMM, we’re just waiting to see whether death or completion will come first.

Just because there are over reactions doesnt change the quite clear evidence that Arsenal have been gradually improving over time under Arteta and now with some smart additions they have made a significant leap forward. Over the past 2 seasons you would rarely see it in their results, if you used your eyes the evidence was quite clear. We’ve seen the same thing ourselves. Recall the number of supposedly serious takes on Klopp not being an improvement over Rodgers because over 50, 100 games their PPG was comparable? Any idiot could see the upswing we started on almost immediately, but if you only looked at results it took a couple of years to really see that signal clearly. Arsenal have been the same. Last season we beat them at home 4-0 and people were quick to treat it as a continuation of the trend of Arsenal getting rolled over at Anfield, but that was a very flattering scoreline for us. We were good, but so we’re Arsenal. At least for 70 minutes. They weren’t quite at the level to turn that into a positive result, and couldnt last the pace of the whole game, but it was a very clearly different Arsenal side than had capitulated at Anfield so often in the years prior. To me that was like a young boxing prospect losing to an established champion by late TKO after having stood toe to toe with him for 10 rounds. They’ve had another year together since then and made very smart moves this summer to further bolster themselves.

At our best we are still better than them, but we are a mile from our best.

This makes me think of the idea that for some of the top teams, you really have to get worse before you get better, because the difficulties in getting to a particular level of performance mean that if you don’t execute it well enough, your performance is going to be a lot worse. But you want to keep persisting with that as a target because that’s the next level of evolution.

Do we have enough fit players? AOC?

ps not the American

If Thiago misses this one i am pretty sure he’ll be out for a few weeks again. That’s the thing with his injury record.

Two players I’m especially looking forward seeing tomorrow are Bobby and Jota.

I want them to disrupt Arsenal on and off the ball as much as they can, especially if we go with 4 attackers. If Thiago is out then obviously it’s Hendo and Fabinho as double pivots.

Jota has good memories of that place from last season, he knows exactly what to do when Arsenal build up from the back.

I want to see aggression, being compact, movement, directness and killer instinct.

In fairness, she’d be more use in our midfield at the moment.

I have a lovely memory of us playing Arsenal (though they looked like Shitty in their blue kit) Bobby has to play and exhibit his magic … and yes I’m calling for Bobby to play which is unlike me but Arsenal he’s a must. I mean 4 defenders and a goalie flapping on the ground is a sight not to be missed!
