Gravenberch out…
Waiting on Isak and Szoboszlai.
Gakpo really doubtful.
Hopefully Jacquet is fit and ready.
If JJ is fit, Araujo at RB. Kerkez back at LB.
Nyoni and MacAllister with Wirtz in the midfield 3.
Munoz, Koumas and Barcola, obviously depending on Isak.
This will be a tough assignment, but we need a won to keep in some form of contention.
Tougher than Lask and not as tough as City.
Wirtz to keep up momentum and Barcola to score a brace.
Match officiels:
Referee: John Brooks. Assistants: Neil Davies, Akil Howson. Fourth official: Anthony Backhouse. VAR: Darren England. Assistant VAR: Gary Beswick.
As usual can’t remember many of them so went with Darren England on bar. @jaffod will he bee looking to fuck us over? If so I hope my choice makes him choke!
Brentford are a solid side with some good players and they will cause us trouble, no doubt. Best hope is that Nyoni & Rio both gained a lot of confidence from the LASK match and will be ready to kick on this weekend. Same with Barcola and Wirtz. Both of them clearly have talent, just need to be more aggressive and relentless in showing it. Barcola could end up being a very important figure for us this season, I hope Isak is ready for a 60-minute runout with Koumas coming on for him after the hour mark. Back 4 of VVD, JJ, Ronnie, and Kerkez please. Would love to see Nyoni and Macca start together in the middle, Wirtz ahead of them, and Bradley/Rio/Isak up front.
Back to the league of cheaters. I don’t expect anything but bad decisons against us from these refs. One can already sense that this corrupt bunch wants to stick the knife in and make the wound even bigger.
On the other hand, our lads are on a clear upwards curve in terms of form and performance levels, and Brentford, despite of being a good team, aren’t Man Cheaty. We have a chance of taking the three points, even with the current team and all the absentees. Let’s hope for the best, fingers crossed!
I like how Andoni sounds like a combination of Rafa’s pragmatism and Jurgen’s empathy/connection with the players. Not to the degree of his predecessors but that’s a nice mix to have.
It is “too early” to confirm whether injured trio Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo will be available. Iraola explained: “We still have tomorrow’s training session to go, but obviously they weren’t ready to face LASK on Wednesday. I will leave the chance open this time, though.”
Giovanni Leoni’s rehabilitation from a long-term knee injury is “taking more time than expected”. The initial target was to get him back in first-team training during the recent three-week international break, but the November international break is now looking more likely.
He added: “Having spoken to the medical department, his injury wasn’t just an ACL. It was a bad injury that involved a lot of issues around the knee. For that reason, he needs to be very confident on it and his rehabilitation process needs to be very thought out.”
Liverpool will also be without Ryan Gravenberch, who is serving a one-match ban after receiving a red card last time out, but Iraola was keen to add: “When we are basically playing every three days or less, we need all of our players available so that we can rotate a little bit for each game.”
It is still “early days” for Bradley Barcola at Anfield, after completing a £123m move this summer, but his Champions League hat-trick against LASK was “remarkable” and “something nice for him”.
Lewis Koumas is “earning the minutes he is playing” after being included in Iraola’s first-team squad: “He is young, so obviously he needs to improve in some ways, but he is ready to learn and be the best player he can be. If I wasn’t confident in him, I know I have other options up front.”
Rio Ngumoha is “getting more comfortable” playing on the right wing this season. The 18-year-old has also had to adapt to playing in front of either Jeremie Frimpong, “who allows him to cut in on the inside”, or Ronald Araujo, “who he needs to allow more width on the ball”.
Liverpool will need to be “at their best physically and mentally” and “ready for battle” at Gtech Community Stadium, especially as Keith Andrews’ side are one of three unbeaten teams in the Premier League this season.
On Brentford’s main threats: "They have good players. They are well-coached. They have a clear idea that has been consistent for a number of seasons now. They are a squad that understands what they are trying to do. They are also good on the ball, physical and honest."emphasised text
Fuck. There really is no sense what sort of career he could have from here. It could be into 2028 before we get to see whether he’s as good as we first thought.
He’ll be fine. They don’t want any setbacks and rightly so. The lad’s 19. He will heal up well. He’s a big unit and those tissues take a lot of strain. Need to be sure.
Think it’s a real wait and see. And then potentially significant time rebuilding physically and catching up tactically after missing a key development chunk.
