Yeah, maybe, but when you look at it in slow motion you see that he did unfortunately tackle him prior to the 16 meter and while you may be right that our man could have gone on, the ref must give the free kick according to the rules.
Think Minamino was good. Judging him on basis of this game wouldn’t be fair. He isn’t getting a run of games which is needed to make the visible impact

wasn’t a pen for me, and I’m usually one of the first ones complaining if a ref gives a foul when its clear that the attacker was getting into the box.

I was suggesting that Kevin Friend should adhere more closely to the rules. The FIFA guidance of 2016 or so actually had that as an example. The trip that took him down was in the box, the earlier fouls were not. It was also so clearly intentional that it is absurd that it was not a yellow, no matter where it was.
Friend had to have deemed the trip as a continuation of the contact outside the box for that to make any sense whatsoever, in which case he must see it as an effort to bring the opponent down. When I think about it, the lack of yellow is more problematic than the direct free kick call.
The thing that irks me is our midfield not gelling in any way - no clear direction , leading to Taki dropping to deep to carry the ball up or Virgil respectively pushing up to high to make stuff happen.
It’s a problem - we might need Gini there to give more structure
