Remember when people called Phil a “long shot merchant”? I’ve never understood why that was an insult? When teams are resolutely sitting 10 behind the ball, having a clinical boot that can connect from range is a weapon.

Still hate the commentators saying for all ‘West Hams brilliant work’ it’s alot fucking easier to set up and play defensive shite footy with 10 men behind the ball than playing expansive footy. I have respect for Leeds and Sheff U as they do both but not managers like this

I think the unspoken implication was that it was what we relied upon more often than not to get us a goal. That said, both things (that as well as it being valuable against low blocks) can be true – it’s like being able to say Fernandes improved Manure when he arrived but take his goal tallies with a grain of salt because he is also a penalty merchant.
