Pre Match Newcastle v Liverpool (Away) 25/08/25 8pm BST

What about Tsimi? Surely a better option than a midfielder?

And so the unravelling of our depleted backline begins… :see_no_evil_monkey:

Only half-joking here. Gomez will have to be thrown in now, when he can maybe manage 30-45 minutes or so at the current stage of his recovery. That means that he’ll break down soon. So, Slot will have to throw someone else in at RB, who will play out of position and find himself at higher risk of injuring himself. We saw this during the famous season when all our options at the back went down the drain at some point. Not there yet, but one injury to a key player (ie. VVD or KonatĆ©) and we could very soon get to that point.

Edit

How many players do you want us to have playing right back?

The issue is you remove two from any position in any team and you’ll be struggling. Effectively it’s 2 and a half at this point.

I guess Conor will be back against Arsenal…I’ve already given up on Joe

If Conor can train then he will be close to being able to train fully so yeah if he remains ok all next week then he will play against Arsenal.

It’s getting through this with a mixture of Endo and Gomez. I really don’t think even Slot was suggesting Szobo would play at right back just more of the attacking emphasis of Frimpong will be put on his shoulders.

Could be entirely wrong but it does show issues not nesscarily here but in other places like Centre back where this becomes more of an issue.

We do have Grav at least which should help.

Curtis Jones at right back.
Problem solved.

Does anyone still think the squad has strength in depth? After one game, we’ve got a big problem.

The problem is some places it does, but not here, how many right backs do you want us to have, 4? Because that’s how many we are suggesting here.

Remove Gomez and it’s still 3 right backs you’re suggesting. A centre back is required if you need Gomez to be fit but Bradley is still growing and that will lead to muscle injuries.

He trained a few minutes … No chance

In theory, we should be fine with Bradley, Frimpong and Gomez. The theory has just been flushed down the drain…

But it’s rotten luck for Frimpong to be fair. Since 2022, he has had just eight days absence through an injury, and now this… :frowning:

Great start. 2 Injured RBs and a half crocked Gomez. Season is less than 7 days old.

On a positive, he spoke very positive about Leoni…he already trained 3times and Slot said it’s as if he’s been here already much longer. One can already see why the club has payed that high fee for him etc.

fuck it. Get him in,

So he’s not going play against Arsenal because he has only trained a few minutes out door a week and a bit before the game? It was evidently when they went out door they weren’t far off the last few seasons.

Why wouldn’t we play Tsimikas?

Exactly. Go 3 at the back. Konate, Virgil, Leoni

Then pack the midfield Szobo, Wirtz, Gravenberch, Mac, Kerkez
Salah and Ekitike up top

That would be the only reason I’d play Szobo. We are certainly short at the back and upfront but I am not sure the left or right sides are the issue. One of those two of the three go down and your in the same situation as you are now with Gomez having to play large amounts of minutes.

:speaking_head: Arne Slot on Joe Gomez :

ā€œJoe Gomez hasn’t had a setback but he wasn’t able to train 3 days in a row. We will see where he is on Monday and if he can start. You can’t prepare for injuries in one position - you can’t have five right-backs. Although we do have three left-backs at the moment!ā€
