Really poor first half from us (although I’m watching on a dodgy stream) but that red card really should be the game. We need to step up now, impose ourselves, and take this game away from them.
I look forward to seeing Geordies moaning tomorrow. The reality is if you don’t give a red for that, you might as well just not bother with red cards at all.
BBC Livetext saying Gordon will be kicking himself at getting sent off leading to a potential 3 match ban - hopefully those kicks are late and studs up like his tackle on Virg
That contact was a lot worse than I thought it was, I thought Gordon got his boot flat before impact (I think he knew he had fucked up before contact), clearly not.
We weathered the first 30 minutes of Newcastle’s frantic attack. Then Gravenberch’s goal struck like thunder in the 35th minute! Newcastle lost their composure and gave up yellow followed by Gordon’s red. I think we’re in great shape after that first half. Let’s stay calm and bring him the 3 points. Newcastle thought they could bully the champs but now the tables have turned.
The problem is when you try to break them, you fear you’ll give away a foul when it isn’t and then a yellow. And then that yellow further restricts you to play your natural game. As much as we can try to keep that isolated from the players performance, it plays in their minds.
Additionally when the same sort of tackles are ignored when on us, it really becomes difficult to be at the best. Hence usually I throw performance and judging our players in such games.. Everton and this one. Get the result all that matters
We drew a lot of piss and vinegar for half an hour, loads of fouls, so frustrating that when we gave some back we were picking up yellows. Eventually they got a yellow too and the refereeing evened out a bit toward the end of the half.
Gordon, very well deserved red. Raked down Van Dijk’s calf and Achilles, studs up, at pace. Could have been a bad injury. Off yet pop.
Second half starting. Stay disciplined, gaps will open, and we will put this to bed.
