Pre Match Thread : Liverpool vs Leeds United 12/09/2020; 17:30 BST

Have to agree on this one, get the feeling the back four will not be firing on all cylinders so there are goals there if Leeds are up for it. Have to fancy to score more though

Leeds back in the big time and playing the champs at Anfield.
I can understand the apprehensive from some but to provide some perspective, we are the fucking champions. Unbeaten at home since year dot.
Forget the past 4 months or whatever, we’ve been mentally on the beach, new season, new challenge brings fresh focus and determination.
Watched Leeds a bit last season. Delighted they are up as they are a proper old school big club. They are a good team who created a fair amount of chances in the championship but they’re playing the colossal that is Big V and our fart tight back 5. Bamford isn’t reliable and who knows what Rodrigo will be like this time around. Keeper is iffy and White is back at Brighton.
As good as Leeds were last season, they haven’t played a team of our calibre in 16 years. And that will be reflected tomorrow.
They’ll scrap and put up a fight but I fancy us to win by 3.

Midfield is probably the only conundrum. I’d go for Fabinho, Keita and Gini.
Rest of the team picks itself.

My team for tomorrow.

Alisson
Trent Gomez Van Dijk Robertson
Fabinho
Wijnaldum Keita
Salah Firmino Mane

I expect Leeds to put up a fight and make it tough, but we should have too much for them.

My hope for this game is to get 2nd half goals by Minamino and Elliott.
Minamino because I think if he can get a goal or two early on, it will go a long way to him feeling fully settled with the club. I’m also expecting big things from him this season.
Elliott because he’s said he’ll cut off that ponytail after he scores - and it’s gotta go.

Leeds manager saying it’s not Anfield without the crowd.
Hopefully we let him know it is Anfield.

Have a sneaky feeling Keita won’t start tomorrow. Can even see Klopp starting Milner in midfield. Also understand “fears” over Fabinho, Gini can also do that #6 role. But something tells me Naby on the bench (with Hendo).

Here we are then, the start of a new season as Champions! Let’s hope we play like the Champions we are and get off to a winning start. I don’t like Leeds, never have and I didn’t want them back in the Premier League. So let’s put them in their place and hopefully they go straight back down.

Not long now, then.
Tricky one to kick us off but I’m glad to have these dirty fuckers back in the top flight. I went over there a few times when I was a little shit and always had a jolly old time.

The “dirty” Leeds teams are long since gone though aren’t they? Isn’t is possible that the only one left from the “dirty” Leeds teams of the past is our own James Milner?

Really looking forward to seeing Bielsa’s Leeds ! That I also look forward to seeing Liverpool goes without saying, but I’ll mention it anyway !
Regardless, tomorrow is the 12 of September, and that happens to be the date I was born in Volda hospital. A win would therefore be extra nice so I hope our boys will oblige me

James ‘dirty’ Milner Vs Leeds it is then.  :innocent:

Haha, I absolutely never said that James Milner was dirty.

My point (which I believe is obvious - and I know you’re having fun) was simply that those Leeds teams are long gone — and I thought it was interesting that there is only 1 person still playing from that last Leeds team to play in the Premier League---- and he’s now our player.

I will not be sure Leeds are no longer dirty fuckers until I see it. I haven’t seen Leeds play since Millie played for them.
The fact that they have just come up from the championship indicates they are at least fair and hard (like our Millie ) or dirtier. We’ll see I don’t know much about them but one thing I am sure of they will be absolutely knackered by the time the match finshes Bielsa will make sure of that (I remember what he did at Marseille )

As for the match I am expecting a win and to be exhausted at thye end as both Klopp and Bielsa make their teams run about abit, just seeing Gini jogging around causes me to lose my breath.

Ready for the new season. I trust Jurgen to make the right calls, and to change things up if things aren’t working. Let’s remind the world why we are feared.

As long as we win then none of it matters but people saying Leeds are really dangerous must not have watched them much last season. They’ve been promoted because of a good defence which was able to carry an awful attack. I know they’ve added a striker this pre-season but they’re really going to struggle this season unless their defence is as good as it was last season (and typically it wouldn’t be).

Don’t care how the game plays out or what the final scoreline is as long as we win, I just don’t think Leeds are going to be a dangerous team across the season.

Just because they played a certain way 14 years ago with different personnel and under a different manager does not mean they play the same way. Nor does the fact that they came up from the Championship.

Bielsa is brilliant - not much denying that. His disciples include Guardiola, Pochettino, and Simeone. They play to score goals. They will press, and hit on the counter quickly. He played a Premier League style of game in the Championship. Many thought it wouldn’t work, but he made it so. That said, Bielsa will surely have a few surprises for tomorrow - whether or not they are enough to hurt Liverpool is another matter.

I don’t think they’ll be a dangerous team across the season either - but in game 1 without fans in the stands where Bielsa has had plenty of time to plan and scheme, they could be problematic - or we could completely blow them away in 15 minutes. Liverpool definitely have better talent on the field and it’s not even close.

Their attack wasn’t that bad last year - they scored 77 goals last season with only Brentford scoring more with 80 goals (West Brom also scored 77), but you’re right in that their defense was solid.

I know scoring 77 goals in the Championship is nothing like going against Premier League defenses, much less that of Liverpool when playing well, but it’s not terrible.

In the end, I’m thinking a 3-1 win for Liverpool.

A lot of those goals just came from pounding on the really bad teams. Stoke 5-0, Hull 4-0, Middlesbrough 4-0, Charlton 4-0 - all of whom were bottom feeders. Fair enough you can only beat what’s put in front of you but the reason the won the league was definitely not because they’re a dangerous side, it’s because they won 1-0 loads of times.

Bamford was their top scorer and he’s not going to be good enough to play in the PL as a main striker. Rodrigo might be better but they’re also not helped by the very minor input of their midfielder. Apart from 34 year old Hernandez there was basically no other player capable of regularly chipping in with goals.

Listening to the Chaps on Football Ramble podcast and they seem genuinely excited for Bielsa being in the Prem and he’ll have something planned for Liverpool that could surprise us. I get the sense this week that the mainstream is all rooting for “plucky” Leeds this weekend to shock the Champions.
