2 games in London in less than 3 days, I was just about say yesterday that it’s maybe better to remain in London! Joking.
Will be interesting to see the teams for tonight. Not so much us, if Fabinho can’t make it then we’ll have to put Matip and Hendo at the back. But Mourinho said yesterday that they have a bit more problems than expected. Didn’t want to mention any names. Perhaps some Corona cases?
Fabinho’s been playing every game, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s injured. We’ve been fortunate he’s lasted this long. Heart tells me this is the game where we show that form is temporary, class is permanent etc but head tells me ‘MourinhoBall’ is just about the perfect strategy to play against at the moment given the difficulty we have in breaking teams down and the lack of pace at the back which leaves us vulnerable to counter attack.
Would like to see a bit more from Thiago in this one. Disappointing since coming back from injury but he’s playing too deep for me. Hard for him to really influence the play unless he’s a bit closer to goal.
Tough game coming up against another low block team that will try to get something on the break. Shame on Spurs that I had to write such a sentence, but that’s what they are under Mourinho.
Hard to know what to expect. Tough opponent, we rise to the challenge, get a good win on the board. Very possible. But this little slump we are in obviously adds reasons for concern.
2-1 Liverpool.
Trent free kick, Bobby neat finish.
Kane (unjust) penalty for them.
2-4 I suspect. One of us needs to turn up and I suspect it will be us. Spurs are as inconsistent as they come and we’re due a change in the wind. Pull 3 points back on united and start to climb back to the top. Come on Liverpool!!
Playing poker tonight (online) with 2 season ticket holders at spurs, 8pm start time with zoom meet. Should be fun.
If Fabinho is out, but Matip and Henderson are back, I’d play Henderson in midfield. Use him as the 6, regain some stability in there, push Thiago further on.
I’d play Phillips over Williams only for the fact that Williams seems to have lost confidence and is making mistakes now that he wasnt when he first came in. The belief that Phillips is significantly quicker than Williams has no merit to it at all IMO and wouldn’t be a valid reason to pick him, and we’ll lose some ability on the ball with Phillips but hopefully he’ll make fewer mistakes. Phillips and Matip attacking corners together could pose a decent threat.
Also, I wonder why we haven’t tried hiding Phillips/Williams at LCB rather than on the right - two reasons:
1 - Robertson as the help instead of Trent. He gets back and defends that long ball in behind better.
2 - more importantly IMO, most teams in the league have better players coming in from the left than they do on the right. If we need to play a kid, we could the responsibility of dealing with them on Matip or Fabinho.
On the second question, I just think it’s their technical quality and lack of experience. Both of them even at RCB are a target for pressing. Phillips probably more so than Rhys. But at LCB, the risk grows. There are situations where even the closest team mates cannot help them. The idea of Phillips receiving and manipulating the ball at LCB doesn’t fill me with much confidence, even if you make good offers without the ball. What was more interesting was that against United, we flipped Hendo and Fabinho at CB. We’ll see if it’s Hendo and Matip today as a “new” duo, if Hendo remains at LCB like he did against United. I’d guess so, because from what I know and follow, Matip still hasn’t played LCB for us.
This is the most important game of the season, well at least it will be until the next one. It’s an absolutely must win game.
Like one of those strained coincidences which are so inartistic, PGMOL, no doubt at the behest of their Emirati overlords have reprised the fetid paring that did for us back in October, the match officials’ equivalent of Burke and Hare, martin “fergies lovechild” (tw)atkinson as ref, and jon “two pens to the spuds” moss on VAR.
Boudica has often remarked that the prophet Isaiah must have been very much like me as I have a gift for taking the dark view that amounts almost to genius. But seeing that paring makes me think that if the prophet Job were to drop by at this moment, I could sit swapping hard-luck stories with him till bedtime.
So, with a brooding melancholia, I can say with absolute certainty, expect nothing from the ref or VAR, and you won’t be disappointed.
Meanwhile, our very own Gaius Cassius Lawro, manipulative, driven by jealousy, and unhampered by morality, has plumbed the depths, his treachery uncovered for all to see. Squeaking and gibbering like the sheeted dead in the Roman streets a little ere the mightiest Julius fell, he has predicted a one all draw.
Hopefully his attempted kiss of death won’t throw a spanner in the works and upset the apple-cart.
