I think we have W9 and D1 at Anfield against Spurs in the last 10. They are the worst team in the league over the last 15 games. And they are missing 13 first team players.
If we beat them - even if we put 5 goals past them it will prove nothing.
In the last 5 years teams that finished 5th in the league ended up on 66 or more points. We are on course to finish on 62.
Arsenal are not the only team in the league to benefit from poor competition.
We really should be winning this, and if we do, we can boost our CL qualification prospects given results/fixtures this weekend.
On the other hand, none of us fully trusts this Liverpool team, and Spurs, while a complete shambles, might show some sort of fight since their Premier League status is under threat.
Losing or even drawing to this injury plagued and messy Tottenham team should really be a standout point in a bad way for Slot’s end of season review by Hughes and Edwards.
Decent run ok, but the football hasn’t improved. Thats where we get found out. The point is, winning today and vs Gala, whilst neccessary and worthy really changes nothing. Today is a free punch at a faltering boxer. If we dont do it, then forget it.
What’s obvious this season is that there isn’t going to be a point this season where we click into gear. So to a certain extent, I’m not really bothered about the football as long as we’re getting results. We just need to get into the top four and then we get to put the season behind us and reset for next year, whether or not that includes Slot.
Do the points tell the whole story? It is also about the viewing. Arsenal are top, but plays very poor football (entertainment wise and also as a team) and they are not necessarily running away with it. They are overly reliant in “special teams” plays and there is a general level of bad sportsmanship that is hard to watch. These are more Graham than Wenger.
Though MC are poor, they are at least trying to play a more attractive version of the game. The rest of the teams tend to play between those two. A team like Liverpool, and indeed the other “bigger” teams should be able to win playing more attractive football. The fact they cannot speaks to a deficiency in the coaching and/or players - otherwise the game has reached saturation and we are stuck with this until the rules are changed or some dramatic shift in tactics…
Maybe it is a subjective view that I hold, grey tinted glasses but my perception is that the quality is poor.
I mean, that hasn’t had anything to do with us ending up third or not. Perhaps I just misunderstood what your point was (and is), but usually what I see when the claim about the quality of a league is raised is about the overall competitiveness of the league, rather than playing styles. After all, if you follow the logic that how well you play (or otherwise) is reflected in the points you have, then a more competitive (and therefore higher quality) league leads to a lower points total?
But to follow on from @RedWhippet’s reply, it is exactly that point, that often quality is only loosely correlated with the points, since a lot of it still depends on luck. So “how poor the league has been this year” should surely make it easier for us to make 3rd?
