Premier League 2023/24 (Part 2)

We’ve gotta believe it’ll be alright in the end.

Of course :expressionless: we all know why

So given Everton are overspending on ‘non top players’ do they still get the points deduction

That’s an absolutely fucking stupid idea.

Only way to punish clubs is points deduction.

Fines and other financial punishment mean absolutely nothing to nation states with unlimited funds.

Points deductions are the only thing that will actually affect them and their sportswashing projects.

Points’ deductions > lowering deducted points > abolishing points’ deductions altogether.

All that in what, less than a year.

Bunch of legends.

Can’t imagine that FSG’d be amenable to legalise cheating and they wouldn’t be the only ones opposed to it.

I think many clubs won’t care as they will feel they will benefit financially from the change or be willing to pay the fine to allow them to transgress.

Aye. One of the main objectives of these spending rules was based on preventing the inflationary effect lower down the pyramid of large external influxes of cash (sports washing) being added to the very top. This is a “solution” to put pressure on that spending that wont have much of an effect and not address that inflation

The mid range clubs will vote in favour.
City might as well win by 30 points as 2. So keep doing what you are doing and we will benefit from the fines.

Its fucked.

They at least have experience of this from baseball, with their fiercest rival and most direct competition being a club who pay the luxury tax every year, and typically more than everyone else.

Seems the other suggestions are a lot better.

Seems the PL want to keep the sporting sanction.

They have to be careful it aligns with UEFA at this point though.

Also don’t get this as I thought this rule was rejected.

Also the best players rubbish… yeah because they will go to errr Saudi Arabia

Tin foil hat time - but could the splurge by Saudi Arabian clubs last summer have been in part an attempt to sway the PL into making this change? Newcastle are in a different part of the spending curve to City and would presumably be benefitting more than City with this change.

The main benefit to City would be if the rule change covers past offenses, but for Newcastle, one would expect them to be looking to spend more.

Possibility but it seems it’s the clubs who are calling for it not the PL bosses.

Also may hit an issue with the new football government czar. Which you expect would have more teeth under a new government.

Important to remember in these matters is the PL is the clubs. They get to decide what rules the league is governed by and the people who work for the PL itself are largely just admisntrators.

I think you’re missing the main point. If the FA issues a 10 point deduction they get no money for doing it. But if they institute a pound for pound on all spending over fair play rules, they make potentially 100s of millions. Which will look much better in their bank accounts, mansions, and their mistresses lingerie…

Suspect it will be an easy choice.

Why not both? Hit them with the point deductions AND the luxury tax.

Nothing to do with the FA is it? It is the Premier League who decide surely and so it will be for the clubs themselves to vote on it…
