Only a week ago we were worried about Dominik’s medical.
Between Lavia and Bajetic, who has the greater ceiling in the #6 role?
This is an important question, since it only makes sense to buy Lavia (particularly at a 50 mil price) if you think he is better than Bajetic now AND has a higher ceiling.
I have to admit, the only time I saw Lavia play was against us at the end of the season. I thought he looked lost and confused most of the game… but then we were completely overrunning Southampton’s defense most of that game so I’ll freely admit my impression is quite unfair.
Sounds like Fabinho and every opposition against us this season. We’re overrun and he’s looking lost.

Presumably there’s a kind of domino effect where everything depends on Rice to Arsenal and Caicedo to Chelsea. If they both splash the cash Southampton may have to reduce the price.

At the risk of people missing the point and starting a debate about how good James Maddison is or isn’t
- James Maddison is a prime aged FA Cup winning homegrown midfielder who has played regularly at the top level for 5 years.
Relegated Leicester got £40m for him. While Southampton have every right to put whatever asking price they like on Lavia, I personally don’t think they have much justification for expecting £50m based off the back of one promising season unless a good chunk of it is through add-ons.
I’m not suprised if we’re not interested at that price even if we really like the player.

The thing about this deal is that Southampton know they’re pretty much guaranteed £40m (I believe) next summer due to that City buy-back clause. Meantime they benefit from a player for a year who can help them get back into the PL.
There’s very little incentive for them to drop the price to facilitate a transfer this summer.

Maddison did only have a year left on his Leicester contract so they had a weaker bargaining position but I think you’re broadly right.
He’s not shown he’s a £50m player but if Rice and Caceido are going at £100m then Southampton can point to those deals to set their valuation for him.
This summer just seems to be madder than usual but I still can’t see us spending £50m on a kid with his level experience no matter what they project his ceiling to be.

I may be guilty of under rating him, but I also think part of it is that Maddison has shown his peak and there is very little improvement left in him or appreciation of his value. You’re buying him for who he is today, which is a player who is never going to even get into a conversation for player of the year. Anyone buying Lavia is doing so because of possibility of him being a Casamiro level player in a year or two

Soton knows if they don’t get a PL club to bite now and extract a huge amount now, him staying in the championship with them is not going to increase his value next year. It’s now or never. Someone will probably bite at the 40m mark, I hope not us.

If Klopp sees this fella as someone worth breaking the boundary for (50m for a teenager with limited experience is that in spite of what your Chelsea’s or Utd’s are doing) then I’m fine with it, he may very well end up being a big game/game changer player for us over the years and then that 50m will be quickly forgotten (Alisson & Virg) but I can’t help but feel there is a lot of better value elsewhere.

I guess that would depend on if he gets a move to a Premier League club or if he is made to spend the season in the Championship?
