Romeo Lavia (DM/CM) Southampton

2-0 down inside 17 mins.

Be driving for the exit at this rate.

tick tock…

Two changes at half time, one of them is Lavia …

Watching his videos, I feel like Lavia is not the traditional destroyer at #6 but he is quick to get to the ball and then transition the ball up the field. So maybe he fits Klopp’s vision better as a midfielder who can quickly convert a turnover or interception into a counter attack. I look forward to Lavia joining our midfield as he signals an evolution of Liverpool system under Klopp. Soton has been a really good ‘farm team’ for us as we have a number of success stories buying from them.

My guess is Lavia will come in around 40-45m and he’ll be worth every penny.

This seems correct. Im sure someone else will come up with a better comparison for who he is, but on the scale of what to expect he is far closer to a Busquets than a Mascherano. He is solid defensively, and will surely get better, but the thing that makes him stand out is how proactive and effective he is with the ball once he’s won it. He would represent an evolution away from a defense first 6 in Fabs to a player of a notably different profile.

This is what I mean by slippery. One second you’ve got him pegged deep in his own half, next he’s glided past two players and is the wrong side of your midfield. I think he can be more effective once he gets into those positions but that movement is a rare skill.

Imagine he was a more incisive passer and that his movement to get there was coming from the deep midfield position. That’s really hard to stop.

To add to that comment, you can see a reason for why he would be pair very well with Trent. Rather than bringing in someone to do Trent’s running and tackling for him, instead he’d be someone who would allow Trent to find any space in the midfield he thought he could be dangerous from and have a great expectation of Lavia finding him there with the ball.

Yeah, agree. His on ball value especially his passing is what makes him unique. He’s not a DM in the mould of Fabinho but he can break up opposition moves, is quick enough to kill transitions & additionally he is able to play a big part in the 1st phase build up.
The fact that the club are dealing with Southampton, a club they have a long standing relationship with, gives me confidence a deal will be reached quickly. Would surprise me if they didn’t want at least one specialist DM on tour so they don’t have the luxury of a drawn out negotiation or jumping between targets. For that reason Southampton may get the £50M.

I remember a lot of discussion prior to us signing Fabinho on how defensive mids like him were becoming a thing of the past then too. I wonder how much his signing then was because of fewer options or whether we changed our minds about the importance of that sort of role/ player?

Concerned if he’s the only CM/DM signed, if as expected Fab and Hendo leave. One has to be an exceptional 19y/o to play in that role for a big team.

That’s a hell of a lot of pressure…esp when you factor in the fact that two other MFs are new to the team…

If he’s good enough, he’s old enough

Sign him and I’d personally be happy with that transfer window

Think we’ve shown our hand now so let’s just get it done, even if it’s more than we’re really happy with paying. Playing silly beggars over the difference just slows down getting him here and integrated into the team.

Reality is, we’re looking at a difference of what we’ve been asking for for Nat Phillips for the last three summers and then happily forgone to keep him around in case of emergency. Or at £100k a week it’d be the difference between his and Henderson’s wages for the next two years and I doubt we’d be paying him that from day one anyway.

Just hope it isn’t dependent on the Fabinho deal. Looks more like he’s our preferred choice to come in whether Henderson, Fabinho or both leave so we should have this fully lined up ready for confirmation on one or both of those deals.

hopefully soton have reloaded their fax machine with more paper…

I don’t think they are playing silly beggars, it is probably just standard manoeuvering to get the structure of the deal right for both parties. The media being what it is, is probably just making more of it than necessary. And, as you say, we have now made an official approach - so I would think we should see this get wrapped up fairly quickly.

If the rumoured bid of 40 million was offered then Liverpool want him and I agree there is no point messing about, I don’t think it depends on Fabinho leaving tho as that deal seems to have gone off the rails a bit
