Romeo Lavia (DM/CM) Southampton

I would be shocked if we get another midfielder or another player.

I remember Klopp saying at the end of the season: we know we have to strengthen this window, perhaps not as much as you think but we will or similar words.

I believe Klopp has been quoted by various sources stating he wants one more midfielder this window.

Even if Klopp hasn’t directly said it, sources very close to the club including Melissa Reddy and Paul Joyce have stated that the plan this summer is 3 MF and 1 CB. Lavia fits the bill for what we’d be looking for to rotate with Bajcetic and Fab in the CDM role. 50M is silly money for him IMO but if we could get him for 30 plus some add-ons then it could be a bargain in years to come. His quality is obvious and I can’t think of a better place for him to become the finished article than Liverpool.

Nope, it was a journo speculating on how we might be paying the release clause. They in fact specifically said they didn’t know how we were paying it and just pointed out it’s entirely possible to use some type of credit facility to pay these release fees.

Doubt we’ll know until for sure until this set of accounts are due and even then I don’t know if that would tell us.

My bad.

Wonder how much we have left in the transfer kitty for this window though ?

Its will be the hardest deal in this summers :joy:

Our outgoings haven’t started. StevieG has just signed for a Saudi Arabian club. FSG are clever - will be surprised if they don’t sell atleast 2-3 players to Saudi. If you ask me our net spend will be around 80-100 million even after signing Lavia, Thuram/Veiga and a CB.

Not a clue how reliable Sacha Tavolieri is. He is Belgium like Lavia and a Media personality :scream_cat: Could be a tosser … :sunglasses:

This tweet confirms Lavia is priority…

Over 100 posts and we still haven’t landed him? We signed Szoboszlai around that mark.

And half of those were about how to pronounce his name

A good player from what I’ve seen and I’m not as fussed by the fee as some, but he’s very young if we’re looking at the Fab successor. Sobs and Mac at least early to mid 20s.

Maybe we’re gambling that Fab will be back to his best with faster legs in front of him? My understanding with this midfield rebuild is we would want reliable, experienced and pacey cover for Fabinho. I’m not comfortable that our DM cover for a player about to turn 30 will be a 33 year old and two 19 year olds.

Fabinho probably starts the season in the team for continuity sake but I think he becomes a defensive sub as the season goes on.

Midfield will be…

Jones Szobo
Mac Trent

Remains to be seen if interest in Lavia is true but if it is he could play the Mac role and allow him to rotate between the CM and AM positions.

I don’t believe having dedicated DMs is the way the modern game is moving and Klopp in particular has indicated he wants a return to a high pressing midfield that focuses on winning possession quickly.

I hope you’re right, although that seems like quite a shift even from the system we were playing towards the end of the season?

I’ll humbly admit that aren’t a huge no of option of affordable top options for a #6 in that 23-28 type age range: Kessie, Laimer, Anguissa maybe?

Ignore me - Laimer is going Bayern!

Laimer already join Munich, Agguisa is 28 next year and will cost more than Szoaamkgkslai, Kessie is shit for a while.

Would rather sign this lad than any of them

He’s had a rough year, Kessie, but I still rate him. Similar profile to Fabinho but very mobile and could adapt to our system.

Those are just examples. My point is we’re still left with a colossal age gap, which I think has definitely been a clear issue over the last year or two.

That is in the phase of attack and at times (depending where we lose the ball) press, but what about when we have to reshuffle to a different structure? Do we go back to 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and who plays where?

Right now it’s still a wild guess to figure who will start the season and how often we’ll play which structure. Especially as it seems we want another midfielder and we don’t know yet who will leave.

Then, we have to see how our new signings do from the word go, do they need time (like Fabinho needed) or not, can they be starting 11 straight away, etc.

If both Fabinho and Hendo stay, Hendo can become more of a competition for Fab. I mean, especially in situations when it’s double pivot and not single, even for “half” of phases during a game.

England might look to create a not too dissimilar structure with Rice, Bellingham (with Hendo as his backup on paper while he’s still called up) and Trent.

We’ll have to wait a bit more to see what our starting midfield will be in August.

It is currently unlikely that Liverpool make an offer for Romeo Lavia until they have recouped some money through player sales. @_ChrisBascombe
