The Corona Pandemic

Much better to just outbid everyone else and then hoard gazillions.

Zero of either, neither has been approved. AZ is probably not too far away, though the reports of low efficacy in over 65s have probably given pause.

Not the fake news reports from Handelsblatt?

I think those are a wildly sensationalized version of some concerns that are real.

They were wrongly reporting 8% efficacy in over 65s. Horrendous journalism.

Better to get your shit together early. It’s about time the UK government got something right.

Yeah, there are concerns over the AZ data, and it would appear efficacy degrades versus patient age, but the 8% seems hyperbolic.

Fine with me. Just could do without the moral high ground stuff when the UK is clearly prioritising its own needs as well.

It’s considering banning exports to other countries of a life-saving vaccine that those countries have ordered?

Imagine the fume on here if that was the case.

Ensuring getting what we ordered and haven’t been delivered. But you’re right in hindsight it would have been much better for a rich country like Germany to do what the UK did, go in early, pay a premium and hoard as much as possible of life saving vaccines as possible for our own population

Whilst simultaneously underwriting the research, development and production costs of the only affordable vaccine to be made available to developing countries at cost price. Works for me.

Omg! It seems never ending.

We truly did everything we could.

Yeah sorry, these words ring very hollow, indeed.

Isn`t the EU insisting on going in late, paying a smaller premium, and covering its own population first at this point?

Right now, it is not an export ban - we will have to see what ‘export controls’ means. Much like Brexit, the disinformation appears to be growing exponentially.

That’s because they are a paradise amongst a warzone, having the luxury of living an absolutely normal life. I would lock down the borders as well!

Was that the full sentence or did it finish something like “… to propogate the virus for 9 months through ‘eat out to help out’, leaving the borders open the whole time, not imposing international quarantine for most of that time, and not taking test and tracing seriously at all. In short, we really don’t know what the fuck we are doing.”

Did it go something like that?

Maybe dubious reporting isn’t ecxlusive to Handelsblatt. All Spahn said was they want controls of exports to ensure we get the fair share we ordered and were promised. Some suspicions about the US role apparently.

Isn’t this idea just a German one right now and the commission have rejected it? Or are the EU considering it?

We have the worst corrupt government ever.
They should have closed the borders last March
They defied the scientific experts.
They did not provide adequate PPE to our healthcare workers and didn’t protect care homes
They didn’t deliver on test and trace.
They gave out confusing lockdown rules to the public.

We now have more than 120,000 dead. This is on the government hands. They failed us and our families.

The US role? That just seems to be the usual total disregard for the rest of the world, while complaining that they would have enough vaccines if they had not been exporting them (they haven’t been). But yes, export control is not quite the same thing as a ban, just doesn’t make for as good a headline. However, ‘our fair share’ is clearly not what the EU really means in a global sense. Astra-Zeneca appears to be prioritizing on date of order placement first and foremost (hence Canada not even scheduled yet), and AZ seems to have upset the EU at least as much as Pfizer has. I suspect the AZ shipment that Mexico was to get in February is toast now.
