Reminded me of a Simpson’s episode when Bart called someone in Down Under to find out when flushing toilet, which way the water will flow (clockwise vs anti-clockwise).
Edit: Coriolis Effect (the kid had to bicycle to his neighbour, which was miles away from his home).
It will at some point, but the production sagas so far show that the output of today is a function of investments and decisions about 6 months ago - and there isn’t a great deal that can be done to accelerate that.
I also suspect that we will discover new bottlenecks as production scales up.
You getting paid by the Liberal Party of Canada? Their flying monkeys love the ‘huge area, massive logistical challenge’ argument, ignoring that the most of the population is quite concentrated.
The massive logistical advantage that Canada has is that you don’t need any special refrigeration equipment to store and transport the Pfizer jabs, just make sure they’re outside.
I remember road trips in Canada as a kid… The only time in her life that Mrs has been quiet for longer than 3 seconds was the bus ride from Calgary airport to the rental car park (6 hours as I remember)
It’s an old Child’s rhyme, basically every Norwegian having grown up prior to 2000, knows this, as it was hammered in during early school years all over the country.
“Det kom eit skip til Bjørgvin i 1349” (A ship came to Bjørgvin in 1349, which was the name Bergen had in the middle ages). It refers to a ship coming from England with Black Death onboard and it is regarded as the start of that horrific epidemic historically (although later historical research have shown that the Black Death actually maybe came to Oslo the year before, but didn’t spread and died out over winter, as the winter was harsh). The ship from England that landed at the old Hansa city of Bjørgvin was the start of the actual epidemic and the eventual fall of the “Noregsvelde” (the old overseas empire), loss of sovereignty, loss of Norwegian culture and heralded the coming of Danish domination for many centuries, as Norway lost more than 50% of it’s population, including basically all almost all priests and nobility (almost everyone who could write) and plunged the country into a cultural darkness and only really arose during the onset of European nationalisms. Regardless, enough anecdotes.
I just read this glorious little note:
Google Translation: South African mutation in Bergen - can not find the source:
NRK reports on Wednesday night that two cases of the South African mutation of the corona in Bergen have been revealed. Efforts are being made to uncover the source of the infection, but this has not yet been found.
This is the first time the mutation has been discovered in Norway without it being linked to an import infection, according to NRK. One case has been discovered in a person living in Bergen. The person in question has not been traveling abroad recently.
We do not find patient zero, says infection control chief Frank van Betten in Bergen municipality to NRK, who adds that it is not known where the other infected person lives.
One positive: since roughly two weeks, the worldwide new infection rate has massively gone down. We are now back at roughly 500k new infections every day (seven days average), compared with a peak of almost 750k, only two weeks ago or so.
Hopefully it can go down further at the same rate, fingers crossed!
Moderna has now provided a further update to their February delivery schedule, reducing the amounts that will be delivered in the last 2 weeks of the month - having already reduced the shipments in the first two weeks by 40% and 25% respectively.
There was an interview with Health Minister Bent Høye that I thought people would probably find interesting. Lately, lots of question being raised as to why we are not vaccinating as fast as Israel and blah blah (probably the same questions as in all countries), but I thought this would be an interview that would be of interest to you fellow nerds.
I recently watched the head of the teachers union suggest that teachers should be prioritised for vaccination as they are at higher risk of contracting the virus and that the school kids have lost enough education already. She made some valid points - I am not qualified to judge if a 25-year-old healthy teacher should take priority over a 65-year-old retiree.
If priority is to be given to certain sectors of society then it would make sense to vaccinate all BAME men before white men - BAME men have a 2- 4 % greater risk of dying of Covid19 than white men. The exact definitive reason for this is not clear - socio-economic reasons almost certainly play a part, other reasons could be genetics and/or low vitamin D levels. If we are to protect the most vulnerable first (which is a good place to start) then surely BAME men should be prioritised over teachers? Or should the greater good of society - kids getting an education - take precedent?
- Is there anything in the agreement Norway has with the EU that would prevent us from concluding separate agreements with companies in order to get more now then?
- We are not exactly in a position where it would be particularly wise to oppose such solidarity. For we are those who have been dependent on that solidarity. So I think there would have been very strong reactions if Norway had broken that solidarity and taken doses from the other countries in the EU, says Høie.
He emphasizes that Norway is a non-member country and that the EU countries have given doses for us to receive.
What had been their reaction to a country that behaved in that way, it is speculation. But it would be extremely unwise to put the collaboration that actually secures us the vaccine today to the test.
Funnily enough, this is exactly what Germany has done.
