The Corona Pandemic

cant you just write 1kg on the thin one and 2kg on the slightly fatter one?

I don’t like hearing the low numbers of Prem players who are unvaccinated.

Arguably they have been resistant due to being in a bubble, at least more than other people enjoy. And then there is the sense of strength, fitness and youth they will doubtless have, thinking that if they do get it, they will shake it off quite easily and build up some antibodies that way.

I can imagine that covers the bulk of the thinking, although I’m sure there are some conspiracy minded objectors too.

Either way, I’d like to see pressure exerted for them to receive the vaccine. Club doctors are in their lives on a routine basis in order for them to do their job. Having the covid vaccine should be a simple extension of that.

Since the Prem is so high profile, it will also send a positive message to the public.

If the clubs wanted to they could insist upon it under the terms of their contract.

Existing contracts? Or would they have to be renegotiated to insert a vaccine mandate?

No, existing contracts if deemed a necessary medical procedure, which it would be. The club could rely on other obligations as well.

Should be simple to sort out then. Hopefully they do.

I wonder if the status quo is because clubs know the objections of some of their stars, and don’t want to get into a public spat over it?

Every dispute between “Participants” (which the Clubs and Players are) has to go to Arbitration under Rule K so would be confidential. The PFA will be involved as well.

Not sure if this is the right place, but this is where I find the role that players’ unions play fascinating and seemingly counter productive. Superfically you can see why a union might get involved to support medical autonomy and the rejection of sanctions for remaining unvacinnated. But how do you balance that against the risk those players are subjecting their teammates to?

Back in the 90s when people started opening their eyes to Steroids in baseball the players’ union got firmly behind those who were credibly accused. Fuck, they have negotiated to make testing a violation of the CBA effectively making them illegal. It seemed to be supporting players being accused, but it essentially cultivated a environment that required players to use or be left behind.

Glad that they feel the Covid side is safer again. However I fear for the rest of us now with the the thought of thousands of @SBYMs being unleashed on the world.

Whilst we Aussies are generally a bad bunch, thankfully no one else is anything close to @SBYM

Quarantine exemption deal agreed

The government and football authorities have agreed a deal that will allow full vaccinated players to travel to red list countries for international duty without having to quarantine on their return to the UK.

This will be subject to a code of conduct which includes restrictions on transport, close contact, and stringent protocols on testing, vaccination and bubbles.

A government spokesperson said: "We have worked closely with football authorities to achieve an outcome that balances the interests of both club and country while maintaining the highest levels of public health and safety.

“Our best defence against the virus is vaccination and these new measures will allow fully vaccinated players to fulfill their international duties in the safest, most practical way possible, while allowing them to train and play with their clubs as early as possible upon their return.”

Hmm…

One of our best defenses against the virus is to pretend that famous and important people do not have to play by the same rules as the rest of you.

Presumably this still doesnt solve the issue of non-brazilian players having to play in brazil?
