Nice post. But *shock horror!* I’m going to question the nick.
Not because I think 100% he didn’t nick it, but the complete lack of evidence that he did.
As much as Fox Aus and the UK media are trying to convince us, Carey didn’t admit to nicking it. He admitted to hearing a feather or noise as it passed the bat, and would have reviewed it if given out, which suggests he heard it but didn’t feel it.
BBG sports who run the snicko operation here, apologised based on Carey’s words alone, and suggested the wrong stump mic was selected, which doesn’t at all explain the 4 frame difference, unless Carey’s stump mic was connected to local servers and the bowler’s stump mic was connected to a VPN in Mauritius.
the 6 or so frames of the ball around Carey’s bat showed a clear gap in all frames. That’s not to say, if the frame rate was doubled out tripled we wouldn’t see the edge, but on the evidence, the ball wasn’t close to the edge.
Moreover on that point, that nick was huge, and surely you’d see a deviation on the ball with such a thick edge?
if the on-field ump had given out and Carey reviewed like he said he would, the decision would have stood and he’d be gone, as I doubt the 3rd umps would consider the spike well prior to the ball arriving being conclusive evidence that he didn’t nick it. This came down mostly to the on field umpire not being convinced.
I mean, gut feel though is that BBG saying ‘wrong stump mic’ is them trying to find a way of of why the video and stump mics are not synced, and they are seeing if they can get away with it. But I still think the circus created around this when there isn’t really the irrefutable evidence they are suggesting is a bit lazy.
Amusing seeing Aussies tying themselves in knots justifying their player doing exactly what they have been demonising Stuart Broad for for years.
Cue lengthy explanations why the two situations are completely different…
english ‘supporters’; ‘were fucking shite and a disgrace to cricket, the whole regime needs changing, and that was a snip, he even admitted it’
1 Aussie poster ; ‘actually, he didnt admit it and youre not really responding to the facts’
every ashes series i kinda have to get out of this thread, maybe its the way the press has framed the narrative over there in the past, (and here to be fair, but maybe its just my local circle who seem to be able to discuss cricket without the tribal shite) but anything to do with the ashes, i find its really hard to get any form of decent discussion
i can understand why the english are down on their team, but this is a really tough place to come, and that last test could have gone either way at one point, really good game …
as could this test be, English far from out of the game, plenty of story still to go.
In fairness @bekloppt, the Aussie commentators and others all thought it was a clear case of a technology error and Carey should have been out. I don’t think @JU97ICE is representative of the Australian response.
In fact I would think that the snicko should be calibrated/recalibrated regularly based on deliveries across the overs as, whenever you have two different input sources, there is always the possibility that one will deviate slightly. The crucial fact re this one is that there seems nothing conceivable other than an edge of bat on ball to which the noise can be attributed. Thats the view of the Australian former players and commentators, a former umpire and the prevailing opinion. England have been unfortunate but they need to move on, wrap the tail up quickly and then capitalise on the great batting conditions to post a decent lead. Otherwise they won’t deserve to win this test.
As to whether he should have walked/ demurred when the umpire said not out I think that ship has sailed in cricket and players just won’t do that (with a few very select exceptions) anymore.
snipped for brevity but i read all your post and agreed
but, yeah, be lovely if there was a perfect mix of 1960s spirit of the game and the current technology, but there doesnt seem to be, im sure im leaning into the aussie experience becuase thats what im exposed to, but the last batter to walk in an under pressure scenario whilst the umpire didnt give out was Adam Gilchrist in the world cup about 20 years ago or something…(im sure there are others, but none i was as significantly exposed to)
so yeah, as with football, the technology is inevitable, but it does take some bit of magic out of the game on some level.
better with it in the whole? probably, but certainly it leaves a hole where there once was something…
Geez even Marnus’ mouth looks like it’s getting sapped in this heat.
It feels like this resistance is temporary. They’ll give the English fans hope with some sudden fast scoring, then completely crumble again like the South Downs coastline.
Goooodddd. Llloooorrrdddd! Make it stop! We know it bounced in front of Uzzie, and all that time to work out of it got glove first before helmet? Snicko couldn’t even pick up the glove getting struck? I mean it wasn’t a glance. It was front onto the glove and the glove wobbled and nothing on snicko?
Contracts will be rewritten and snicko is toast after this.
You look at Stokes right now and the guy’s 34yo body is starting to seize up in this heat, and his warcry for bringing the “dog” () and more fight in his team has fallen on deaf ears: he’s the only one implementing it.
Now, I don’t want to pump his tyres because the absolute confusion in batting style right now amongst his teammates is down to him and Baz, but it still must be frustrating to watch teammates just getting out on a good batting pitch because they seemingly couldn’t be bothered fighting, at this moment, in these conditions, must be super frustrating.
Australia will wear Stokes down here (as the only English resistance) and even his sheer willpower won’t be enough. This isn’t a bad group of English players. To lose with a bad list of players is one thing. But this team is making themselves look worse than they actually are.
It’s brutal. As GK says, you have to feel for Stokes.
I didn’t think we’d win the series, but I thought we’d make a go of it.
This is beyond pathetic and the only silver lining is that McCullum has to go.
You can make mistakes, but to refuse to acknowledge them, and then double down is inexcusable. We’ve had some fun along the way, but the limitations of the method and the person behind it are plain to see. If you can’t motivate a group of players for an Ashes tour Downunder, you shouldn’t be a coach.
Australia have been far superior, yet again. They’e had important players missing and not been fazed in the slightest. Even others who were supposedly written off have stood up.
England haven’t been in this series since the first day at Perth.
Moving away from the Ashes, this is a bit of a strange move from Italian Cricket board (that is 3 words I never thought I would ever say), sacking their captain a few months before next years T20 World Cup.
