So can anyone take the stage from Cav today?

I struggle to nominate anyone - Wout surely left it all in the TT and Philipsen, Colbrelli or Matthews just wonā€™t beat Cav right now unless he gets boxed in (which seems unlikely) or crashes (hopefully not!)

Boardman yesterday was banging on about a breakaway given there are no sprint teams other than DQT to chase it down. Canā€™t see it myselfā€¦but I ainā€™t the expert being paid for my opinion.

Cavā€™s odds must be very short indeedā€¦

I think that the situation we were talking about can be related to deisel Vs Petrol in cars.
Mohric was in deisel mode. To me he looked tired but kept his speed up producing a lot of torque at lower rpm (cadence). The chasing group could match his speed but were very disorganised and attacking in fits and starts and couldnā€™t, on average, go faster than Mohric despite higher rpm (cadence) (petrol mode)ā€¦

When was the last time there was a breakaway succeed on the Champs elysees? Alex Vinokourov about 15 years ago??

Boardman is a bit of joke in Australia. Even used to have a tipping competition where riders were valued in ā€˜Boardmansā€™ with every rider rated from 7-100 Boardmans.

Sorry Flobs but while I see what you are trying to get at thats not a great analogy. In cycling the ā€˜dieselsā€™ refer to big guys with high functional threshold power outputs (ie sustainable power) vs the others (not referred to as petrols, lol) who may have lower sustained FTP but a better 5-20 second power output and so win in a sprint after drafting behind the ā€˜dieselā€™ and being towed to the line. Cycling certainly isnā€™t always fairā€¦

2 days ago we saw that only Alpecin-Fenix were making an effort, there was a crash and Ineos + UAE started demanding they ease up. Alpecin were reluctant but in the end did and once they did any chase down was over.
Itā€™s been a very disappointing tour in that respect there just havenā€™t been any big attacks from far out by any team. Itā€™s been very much like the teams are resigned to the order;. There have been individual attackes from the start of stages that have gone on and on but no real strategy from the teams. Some commentators here have been saying these sustained attacks by individuals has tired the peloton (itā€™s stop start stuff). As I have said before many teams are on stage winning thinking now rather tyhan top 10 (itā€™s much better for them DQT is the big example).

Agreed Flobs

No sport is.

Hasnā€™t been helped by the GC being sorted so early and also the sprint field being very weak (for the TdF)

Remember as a 9 year old being super excited by the 1990 WC and being inconsolable when Italy won the quarter final and why it wasnā€™t fair that they kept getting to finals (was a history conscious nerd).

Thatā€™s the oneā€¦2005.

Certainly no one quite like him in the current peletonā€¦

Roller, punchers, climbers sprinters. Mohric was definitely in roller mode (hence diesel) even though he looked tired.
When talking of power output diesel and petrol is just an easy way to do it, diesels have max torque at 2000 rpm petrol at 4500 rpm. it is reasonable to use in specific circustances imo. (as I was but perhaps not in general technical discussion (which seems to be your point here (however it wasnā€™t a general situation being talked about imo).
I conceed you grasp the technical stuff better than me. At least you get what Iā€™m trying to say.

Not for me. Surely van aert fancies a go and is Calabrini still in there? Is the green jersey decided?

It is.

Cav winsā€¦

Cheers guys on the cadence stuff. I should have been more specific on a comparison between lower gear higher cadence, lower cadence higher gear.

Particularly how watts translates to speed. I know for example that track cycling is all about watts and they know exactly what watts will return in terms of speed and time. But to my mind this must vary between cyclists, bikes, body position, gears and obviously cadence. Iā€™ll check that article later.

Iā€™m scared to put a computer on my bike. I might not even register a reading.

Now that the family is squared away (no more babies) I have a few goals I want to focus on over the next decade, and a power meter will be without question the best tool to get me there (imo).

Figure out your Functional Threshold Power (FTP) and then train accordingly (and pay a shitload of attention to your core!!!)

Or you could just get out and ride the fucking thing. Thereā€™s that tooā€¦ :swimming_man:t4: :biking_man:t4: :running_man:t4:
