Crazy thing is, the pros would do that in an hour :flushed_face: and thats before you look at other metrics like heart rate, lactate etc.

Thanks, 53 now, where did that go? Some health issues along with the usual lack of strength and being too heavy, but a nice couple of hours.

Aiming to commute to work on the bike again this week. That’s a short 12km each way but lumpy. Trying to sort my head out for the diet thing too.

Fascinating week or two.

Andrew Feather, 41 year old amateur beats Pogacar (sort of). Crazy fit bloke with some silly cycling numbers. Vo2 max of 83 and FTP of over 400 watts. Upper zone 2 threshold (lactate thingy) of 370 watts.

And the Tour route for 2026 has been announced. Oh my stages 19 and 20.

I’m buying a smart trainer tomorrow.

In a week that has reported Pogacar as havingva VO2 max in the high 90’s I’ve been getting my head round indoor training and what I need to do.

This evenings session was this. I’ve been short on anaerobic load so time to work on that a bit. Long Zone 2 tomorrow.

Cadence is too low?

Lol. Just on that, they say you should aim for a general cadence of 90 rpm. I find that stupid tough. I’m far more comfortable in the 70’s with my current set up and trainer.

Anyhow I’ve been studying up a lot on zone 2 training, improving mitochondrial density and all that. Interesting stuff. So I’m trying to see how that based on the recommended 80-20 split works for me.

My numbers are so pathetic it’s embarrassing to be honest but it can only go up I guess. It doesn’t help thst all my Garmin metrics tanked as soon as I started on the trainer. I guess having the power meter giving actual data got rid of any over estimates. Bugger, so humbling.

I’d agree with @dalglish, but at the same time you have gotta do what is comfortable.

I average about 85 on the trainer. All of the science says a higher cadence is way more efficient. Takes some getting used to, but you can train and adpat to anything, really.

There’s a whole load of that needed. My posterior is still struggling with 1.5 hrs on the trainer. I need to get better clothing to be honest.

Garmin protesting today. Status is strained despite optimal load, vo2 max falling, hrv status has become unbalanced. Rest day I think, even though I dont want to. Utterly pathetic after 1.5hrs zone 2 yesterday.

When I was a proper MAMIL, I trained myself to ride smoothly with a cadence of 100; I could increase this to 105-110 comfortably if I was looking to open myself up and it would drop down below 80 when I was going up steeper hills (I needed a granny gear instead of maxing out on a 34:25) and I really felt the burn.

That’s crazy good. Something else for me to work on then. Dang, mental fatigue will be a thing too. For reference the 60 quoted above was off the back of each interval having turned myself inside out. I clearly have a lot to learn and a lot of developing to do. I’m fascinated to know what is even possible with my CKD.

Got to admit to having a love hate relationship with all the numbers and data that you can get. Humbling when I look at my own and amazed looking at other peoples.
