The Film Thread

Sicario was what got Taylor Sheridan , he of Yellowstone fame, on the map. The other film he did before delving into “Alpha male” ego porn tv was Hell or High Water and that is well worth checking out.

On a much more positive note to my Sword and Sorcerer updated above I gave Ghibli a try and started with Spirited Away. What a totally wonderful film that is. When she makes No Face sit down on the train with her and tells him to not misbehave I was jumping out of my seat cheering :joy:

I loved both of them but I loved Wind River the most, I guess. I didn’t watch Those Who Wish Me Dead because of poor reviews and because I genuinely can’t remember the last time I saw an Angelina Jolie film that I liked even remotely.

Was that the one with Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges ?

Glad you enjoyed Spirited Away. Its a wonderful film.

No one lives starring Luke Evans. It was both weird and meh in my opinion. Twist occurs about half hour in and after that it becomes a pointless gore fest with none of the questions about Evans character answered.

That whole train scene is one of the greatest in cinema history in my opinion.
It’s so beautiful it hurts.

Man what a drab Ferrari was, does a good enough job of flipping between personal and professional life but not one I could get behind from a storytelling point of view….well because there wasn’t much of 1.

My son saw Wonka on his day off and loved it as well. Definitely one for my list.

I’m going to try and complain much less in 2024, so before I run out of time, I watched the Mario movie and Across the Spiderverse this week and they were both a bit crap. Mario just doesn’t have anything close to a plot or jokes and Spiderman is awful for the first hour, then alightly improves, then

Finishes with a to be continued…

And I didn’t mind the first Spiderverse film. It was overhyped but still okay.

the best film i saw this year!

Took my 3yo today. Thoroughly enjoyed it :+1:

Watched the Creator last night.

This was the Gareth Edwards sci fi film hyped by many in the industry as the test case for whether crowds would come back for novel, serious cinema unattached to existing IP. They didn’t. That may well say something about what can be successful at the box office but the main issue is it is a seriously flawed film that just isn’t very good. It’s a great idea and has some beautiful shots, but feels like the film was made from the first draft of the screenplay. Where there were holes that should have been filled with good editing and script revisions they instead just filmed it and “somehow palpatine returned” it instead. It’s a shame because there is the basis of a really good film in there somewhere

Was it really that novel? I saw the trailer and just thought it was an unoriginal sci fi movie, as much as I love sci fi, I just didn’t see anything in the trailer to reach out and grab my attention.

Well yeah, there is that as well. I think it tried to tell a different story about us vs the machines, but you need to watch it to understand that it isn’t just another terminator. And it isn’t worth the time to recommend anyone do it.

His name sake was far better prior to retirement.

We watched Leo last night. Family animated film. And honestly really quite enjoyable. There’s enough comic stuff in there to keep parents engaged.

Not sure if I am late to the party on this one but I watched the movie the holdovers on peacock this weekend. I really enjoyed it. I though Paul Giamatti and his costars were excellent. Would recommend. It did not necessarily feel like a Christmassy movie.

I’ve heard that mentioned among a few best of the year lists and didnt realize it was on streaming already.

Sideways and About Schmidt were brilliant films. Have high hopes for this one.
