The Film Thread

So did i. Disliked the film immensely. I dont know if that was because of Sam Worthington, who i’ve never warmed to, and so avoid anything with him in.

Yeah, me too. I also did the thing of switching back and forth with the glasses not feeling entirely uncomfortable either wearing them or watching it not wearing them. But I at least got what people got out of it. But not that I can understand that it’s worth doing a 3rd and 4th (or even a 5th as is now being suggested) and while I accept the “I spoke to cab drivers and thats how I knew Trump was more popular than Clinton” method is faulty, I know of absolutely no appetite for it

These days, everything is either a sequel, a prequel or a reboot. No wonder people lose interest in famous film franchises.

I think studios are far less willing to take a risk nowadays. Hence rehashing stuff thats been done before.

I liked the original Avatar, the 2 was too long but enjoyable enough.

BBC not happy with their wash:

Critics are full of themselves. Just got home. Was a bit long, was a ‘bit get on with it’ at times and very similar to the first one but on the whole, solid 8 out of 10 for me. Love Christopher Nolan, for example, but does my fucking head in with complicated plots that’ll go straight over the top of your head if you need a piss. Watchable, easy to follow even after said piss break, immersive visuals and it moved the story line along. What’s not to like

yeah i maybe a bit biased here, as my son was around 8 years old when he first watched avatar and he loved it, so we look forward to the new release, and loved the last one.

look, it wont make my ‘top 20 greatest movies’ in a hurry, but i didnt mind it as a bit of a spectacle.

its like looking into the fire as you go camping, sometimes you dont need to be challenged, sometimes you just need to watch colorful things move

Kelly McDonald can make a film about jigsaw puzzles interesting.

I watched The Menu last night. Ralph Fiennes and several other well known actors. Enjoyed it. Not what I was expecting, and quite dark.

I’m finding films that have original or slightly wild story lines far more enjoyable these days. The usual blockbuster rehash of something done before just doesnt interest me.

I liked Avatar but Avatar 2 was exactly the same movie except now in water.

I haven’t looked up the new one but based on the title I have a suspicion its the same movie again but with fire or lava.

Think you’ll have to watch 3 to realize 2 isn’t actually like 1 but 3 is very much like 1. Make sense of that, hahaha. I didn’t like 2 at all but this one is pretty good, worth a watch.

As good a place as any to put this I suppose. I’m a bit of a history buff and a series about WW2, Apocalypse, was one of my favourites many years ago. Found it on YouTube yesterday and started watching it again. Amidst that I came across Sgt. Mackenzie lament and went down a bit of a rabbit hole. Heard it before in films and thought it was pretty cool, decided to finally really pay attention and find the lyrics.

Tell you what combination of all that and didn’t I bawl a bit. Bloody hell. I can’t find an original but I’ll link to a video I found with the lyrics:

not an expert on this, but that sounds like old Scots,

i also googled Sgt. Mackenzie’s lament and MacKenzie was from the Elgin Rothes area in the Moray area of Scotland.

oddly, in this area, they tend to speak a toned down version of the the Doric, rather than the Old Scots, ken!

Where abouts are you? It always amazes me how rapidly accents can change across Scotland. Even between neighbouring areas like Lothian and Fife.
