The Film Thread

Good point. In this context it is worth going back and rewatching the two Dalton films. They were an early attempt to turn to a more serious approach in response to the almost cartoonish series it had become under latter Moore. They were not received well at all, but I think it was because people werent ready for a serious Bond. In retrospect though I think they are two of the better films of the series.

Rightly so. The clips I’ve seen of it are awful.

I hoped that was the view you had.

Maybe not, but if recent history is anything to go by, a reboot is almost inevitable.

Good points. And you are quite right, film makers will blame misogyny if their reboot bombs, rather than accepting that their product is of poor quality, and just does not entertain/appeal to its target market.

I thought it was four? Anyway Ghostbusters 2016 only lost $125 million so not a complete disaster for the studio.

I enjoyed Rogue One,thought it was really good.Couldn’t they just do something similar,a stand alone action(not comedy) movie where the secret agent is female, and see how well it does at the box office.

Don’t see why not. The issue to be careful of is where people start to draw comparisons. It could go bad if people start doing that.

Rogue 1 wasn’t bad IMO, because it was obviously part of the Star Wars universe and tugged on those heart strings but also filled in gaps in the original story. That drew interest. It didn’t use any of the original characters and was therefore able to stand alone. From memory the major criticisms of it were perhaps some of inaccuracies between Rogue 1 and the tale told in Star Wars.

Just saw the movie Arrival. After the series Dark, something to completely twist your mind into the realm of possibilities. Also makes you wonder how we as humanity might end up being our own doom, given our nature and train of thoughts. Being a sci-fi movie, it does exaggerate theories, but was worth a watch.

You loved Dark ? Good man, good man. Good man indeed.

Dark is maybe the best series I have ever seen. I am in the middle of season 3 now, ultra complex, particularly since I saw season 1 and 2 in march/april. Damn fine sci-fi/horror. The acting is sublime and the human relations, emotions so realistic. Obviously not realistic that all of that awfulness happens etc., but the characters react and talk in very realistic ways.

It is not fun to watch Dark alone though, so there is that. Better to have someone to share it with and talk about it with.

Got to admit that I was not very impressed with Arrival though, but one cannot agree about everything.

As for Star Wars (I am a fan of the old films), liked Rouge One. That was a good stand alone I thought.
Otherwise, I am a huge fan of the Mandalorian series. Light hearted, but very good Star Wars.
As for the “new” episode 7, 8, 9; only watched 7. Was very disappointed, so want to wait a year or two before I watch the two last ones, as every friend of mine who likes Star Wars have been telling me that they are much worse. But the Mandalorian is great.

Yeah. I liked the concept of Arrival. It wasn’t something out of the world, but not bad IMO. Something new and had that suspense factor which I didn’t expect for such a movie.

Dark on the other hand though, just wow. Story line aside as that is brilliant without which other aspects aren’t worth, like you mentioned absolutely wonderful acting. The characters selected are so perfect, along with that being perfect in not extending it unnecessarily, perfect 3 seasons - neither more, nor less. That combined with the amazing music, character development, etc. loved it.

You can go two ways with this now.

One would be to watch later in full knowledge of the disappointment to come.

Or watch now and get it over with.

I found myself swept up in a wave of nostalgia watching these films and enjoyed the moment but have become increasingly angered by the complete and utter screw up and political bullcrap that they became. Utterly ruined the franchise for me now.

I’m more than happy to expand on my thinking if anyone is interested.

I sat through that bucket of mucus “Contact” with Jodi Foster.

Finally at the end -just as I thought it would get interesting and we would get to see the aliens - they throw in some lame plot line of " we thought it would be easier if we appeared as your Dad"

More like the studio thought it would be cheaper not to create believable aliens.

What a complete crock of shite that film is.

Sorry for coming to this so late, but it could be interesting indeed. The film of the eighties is totally unworthy of the book imo, and it was about time for someone to try again. Of course, it could end up in failure again, we’ll see.

(Sharing @Magnus’ opinion that a series, or at least a sequence of three films, like what was done for Lord of the Rings, might have been a better idea in order to encompass the complexity of the story.)

Just found this thread, well made up, love a good Filum.

Rogue One is up there in terms of Stars Wars films, the original 3 are still the best, the new ones are nowhere near good enough for me, would rather watch Phantom Menace I think.

Mandolorian has been outstanding as well, really enjoyed season 1 of that.

I got caught in the same trap with Arrival, sells really well in the write up and trailer and it was awful, hate films like that.

Although I do like a good ‘bad film’, does anyone else? I’m talking about the ones were from the write up and trailer they look truly terrible, far fetched plot, bad acting etc. Can really get onboard with films like that.

Hobo with a Shotgun was the last good bad film I watched.

Correction: Watched Swallow and ‘The Drone’ since Hobo with a Shotgun.

Highly recommend The Drone for Bad Film fans, some belting scenes in that

Anyone has seen Lucy? I saw it and thought it was good, albeit a bit over the top at times.

I actually stopped seeing a woman I was dating because she thought it was good. Anything that starts with the stupid premise of what would happen if we found a way to use the other 90% of our brain makes me want to kick puppies.

Worth a like just for your principled stance.

Maybe we should start a thread on best reasons you’ve dumped someone?

Of all reviews I have read, this is probably the best review I have seen of a movie

Not really a fan of Soumitra but I loved the Feluda books. The movies, though directed by the author himself, weren’t half as good but Soumitra did an OK job. It’s not easy to give life to an iconic character.

RIP Soumitra.
