The Film Thread

They even managed to come up with a satifisfying ending to it all, which rarely ever happens in these type of shows imo.

Only seen the two first episodes of S 3, so have a few to look forward to now !
Nice to know that the ending is not bad

I must be one of the only people who likes the Star Wars prequels. They have the best fight scenes of the franchise by a mile. Some silly characters and bad storytelling but fun overall. Duel of the Fates is the best piece of music in the franchise too.

Rogue 1 is great, the Force Awakens is decent. Solo was an easy watch. ep.8 and 9 are forgettable, I can’t even remember what they’re called. Palpatine zapping the sky was the most stupid shit I’ve ever seen.

Over the massive space squid in Solo?

I’m torn on the prequels. The story itself is brilliant but it’s not been delivered that well. To many moments where your just WTF. Metaclorians for example - just stupid. And I’ll dare say it Jar Jar Binx.

But they overshadow the last two films by several country miles. Episode 8 was a complete disaster ruined by a person running a personal vendetta within Disney and an utterly incapable director. It was a complete and utter fuck up. The first sadly sowed the seeds for that failure while the last (Ep9) simply had too much to put right and still managed to screw that up as well.

I agree. I think there are real seeds of quality in the narrative of the prequels, they just delivered on them terribly. I think the one resounding conclusion of the new trilogy is their creation was driven by commercial opportunity rather than because they had developed a story they wanted to tell. I think that is reflected in the sheer pointlessness of much of what happens. It’s criminal that the films could have been approached this way given that a lot of thought has gone into stories of where this universe could go in the time after episode VI in the past 35 years.

I watched a documentary called Sour Grapes on the weekend, a look at fraud in the high end wine market. It is not meant as a comedy but it’s still really quite funny seeing the degree to which these fuck you money were taken to the clearners.

I agree.

The Force Awakens is basically Star Wars with a Mary Sue (zero flaws or weaknesses, never loses) female Luke Skywalker. Fuck, they couldn’t even come up with any original planets or new Imperial threat. Plus they had this mindset of phasing out the older cast / characters (ok) but introducing far too many new characters all at the same time.

yep so completely driven by what was seen as a money spinner sold off the back of the success of the original trilogy. Frustrates the hell lout of me that they basically did an Episode 4 remake and still managed to screw it up.

Loved him in Satyajit Ray’s movies and as Feluda.
Have you watched this short ‘Ahalya’ which went viral on YouTube couple of a years ago? Great actor he was.

Brazil was one of my favourite films. I loved the anecdote about how the studio was impressed by the success of the Star Wars movies so wanted to do a Sci-Fi movie in the same vein and somehow thought that Terry Gilliam was the guy to do that.

Just found this, that is equally funny.

Brazil is one of those films I loved the first time I saw it, but I’ve never gone back and rewatched it. It’s not an easy watch, and I wonder if it might lose something with a repeated viewing.

That’s the reason I didn’t want to watch The Deer Hunter again for a long time.
Turned out it still had the same effect on me though.

yeah, totally agree. I’ve watched it several times, but not for a good few years (at least 4 or 5 maybe longer). I don’t think watching it 2 or 3 times lessened it for me, but i was much younger when i saw it and had forgotten some of what had happened from the first time. I do wonder how i would react if i were to watch it today, particularly as my taste in movies has changed somewhat to less dark content.

Mrs and me rewatched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and both of us couldn’t comprehend what we originally had liked about the film.

Ducks for cover.

It feels like 80s films in particular have aged really badly, we watched Sixteen Candles the other night and we were both laughing almost constantly at how offensive it is. Racism, sexism, casual sexual assault… it’s a hot mess.

I think 80’s movies were often bad, but I dont know how different as a % as compared to other decades.

Never liked sixteen candles despite being a huge molly ringwald and John hughes fan. Much preferred pretty in pink.

It might sound preposterous but I never saw any Star Wars, Harry Potter movies in my 40 over years of life. Never felt I missed out. I love mysteries, sci fi horror but not those… I don’t know what genre you call those. Hell I did not watch Titanic or Avatar too

I recently watched the Empty Man and Synchronic. Not going to win any awards but I enjoyed them.

Titanic is so, so, lame. Would you believe, it’s still on TV. Avatar is average, if you consider it a hybrid of action and fairytales. First few Harry Potter movies were great, rest are just average. I have seen only one Star Wars movies, when I was a kid.

The end of Brazil feels like a punch in the gut. And stays with you for a long time.

One of my favourite things is talking about how Mad Max Fury Road has so many similarities with Brazil.
Both female leads with short hair driving massive trucks. Both being dismissive of the male leads at first. Dystopian future, where everything is ruled by men.

Half Blood Prince is magnificent, though.
