The Film Thread

I loved the original Star Wars Trilogy. Haven’t really liked the following ones (although the Mandalorian looks like it may scratch that itch!). I think it is one of those sets of movies that has a lot of influence on movies and culture that makes it worth watching just so you can catch the references.

Agree, and The Mandalorian is fantastic, incidentally.

The Mandalorian is good but is in danger of becoming too repetitive. It’s becoming as formulaic as Law and Order or The Bill now.

Hopefully that doesn’t last.

I haven’t actually watched any of the second season yet, I’m waiting for it to finish so I can binge it over the course of a week.

Just had a discussion (and subsequent viewing) with ‘er indoors about horror films.

I won’t start a poll, as there will be as many different answers as there are posters on the forum, but what is the single scariest film you’ve ever seen?

FWIW, she goes for the original Carrie, whereas I’d say that the Japanese original of Dark Water takes some beating. As you can probably tell, we don’t go for the tacky gore-fest type of “horror” film.

I apparently hid between the seats when I went to see ET.

I was 23 at the time.

Just kidding, I must have been 5. It’s not at all scary, of course, but it was to 5yr old me. Does that count?

I saw Psycho when I was a bit older (10 maybe?) didn’t fancy that much! Then saw Name of the Rose about a year later and found Valentina Vargas much more to my liking.

Eraserhead not so much scary as wtf

One of my mates is a massive old school horror fan. A few of us watched this drunk at about 3am a few years ago on his suggestion, incredibly disturbing film.

As for others…I’m not really into horrors, but the missus and I watched The Strangers a few years ago and I still use a line from that to shit her up today.

I’d also agree that Carrie is terrifying. Always used to be on e4 here. Great film.

Audition and Oldboy are good Asian horrors but I can’t actually remember if they’re scary or not. Probably not on that basis.

We’ve watched Nosferatu whilst drunk in the early hours too, really good film from what I can remember.

For some reason i’ve always loved movies and shows from the 20,s/30,s/40,s.Must be what i grew up with, although i grew up in the 70,s and 80,s.

I try to draw the line between scary and disgusting, that’s why I stay away from Japanese and French horror. In that sense, Ari Aster’s work made my stomach churn but it didn’t make me think about it the way some non-horror movies did. I’ve already written about how frightening Se7en was for me when I first watched it. Requiem for a Dream was crushing. The Shining also scared the hell out of me as I was a kid. Now that I’m an adult, it still scares the hell out me, too!

Nothing, though, comes close to the feeling of helplessness, dread and despair that Eraserhead induced in me. I always say that it’s the best movie I’ll never watch again, even though I love Lynch’s work. I still keep reading about it, though, at the moment I watched it, I didn’t know about the circumstances in Lynch’s life that influenced him to film it the way he did. It still wouldn’t make it any easier, though.

I saw Jaws when I was far too young which happened to coincide with living in Australia, seeing a real one preserved in the back of a lorry and ready stories of Rodney Fox and stuff.

That didn’t do me much good as far as a good nights sleep was concerned but has left me with a good level of fascination about sharks ever since.

That’s a good one. I’ve been nervous about going into the sea ever since.

yep, it properly fed on that basic fear of what lies below. The fact that they have lots of big teeth didn’t help either. Actually seeing one both helped and didn’t. Understanding that as an 8 year old I could comfortably fit inside the mouth of a 16 foot shark did not lead to sweet dreams.

Still I’m really fascinated by them to this day

The Haunting (1963) I found really spooky when I first saw it.

Weird and disturbing, but also, like some of Lynch’s stuff it feels like a piss take. Like it’s so abstract so as to be about nothing. Does anyone have an idea? Inability to grow up and be responsible and the fear of fatherhood?

Has anyone watched the original Thai horror movie “Shutter” (2004)? Not the usual crap remade by US in 2008.

The Shining (1980) This movie shock me, but Jack Nicholson is my all time favorite, and he’s so great in it.
Still a great movie.
