The Film Thread

Create a list based on genre, only then will the list and subsequent discussion be any useful.

But then again it would be subjective. Just off the top of my head I’d ask where ‘Shawshank’ and ‘6th Sense’ are?
I personally love ‘The Producers’ (the remake with Broderick and Lane). I could watch that over and over.

And don’t forget The Meaning of Life!

So often gets overlooked, but in my view is just as good, if not slightly better

Maybe we need a TAN list of the top 30 films you must see in your lifetime

Who do we know that could organise and collate such a list?

Similar to the incredibly popular “The Greatest” series.

I have the tech skills of a dead donkey so…

Just stick @ZinedineBiscan on it…he seems to enjoy these things, he’d even go out his way to find the most dedicated stress-free site for us all to join.

5 off the top of my head, Avatar, Rambo, Captain Phillips, Catch me if you can, Mr & Mrs Smith.

Oh & Grimsby Brothers

& Dark Knight

There’s too many really, even in my young life time.

Would be interesting to see if we could reach a consensus, but I very much doubt it due to personal choice and what factors should influence the decision. For me it’s as much importance to include movies which showcase advancements in film making techniques, but movies should also be culturally important to be included.

Something like Avatar is a valid suggestion due to the way the movie was made, but I’ve head it’s a bloated pile of crap, and on that basis is it a must see?

I think it’s definitely worthwhile watching foreign language movies , but then how do you pick which ones to include? I know they had a Wong Kar-Wai movie on the list, but I personally prefer Chungking Express. It’s perhaps my favourite film. But I’m still not sure I would class that as ‘must see’.

@ZinidaneBiscan is a very good choice.

But maybe we need someone more objective, someone that takes no prisoners, maybe someone more cynical even?

Absolutely

What we would need is a knockout system - A way of whittling down the contenders.

Revolutionary I know , just how could that be achieved??

The Dark Knight
Deadmans Shoes
The Godfather Trilogy
Lord of the Ring Trilogy
Star Wars (original trilogy)
Taxi Driver
Goodfellas
Saving Private Ryan
Gladiator
The Matrix 1
Fight Club
Trainspotting
Pulp Fiction
Back to the Future
Resevoir Dogs
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
Guardians Of The Galaxy

When I used to be on RAWK I joined in to the drafts they did, basically 1 poster organised a draft with a theme - So for example it could be 5 films, 1 from each decade, including 1 with a female lead… All members of the draft would take it in turns to pick their films till complete. Then each drafter would face off in a cup style competition, you’d post your 5 films and everyone else would vote which they prefered… By the end it was a final and you’d get a winner.

Lots of themes - Super Heros, Football players etc.

Might be fun?

2015 - The Revenant
2014 - What we do in the Shadows

Good list, that. I don’t agree with every selection, obviously, but that’s a very fair shout.

Similarly The Deer hunter or even Apocalypse Now. Yes it is a strange list.

Not a single sci fi or horror on that list either.

For example I’d argue that films like Jaws, Star Wars part 4, the exorcist, psycho, the shining, Alien. Not fully because of the quality of them by today’s standards but because if the impact they made back then.

“Deadman’s Shoes” that’s a cracking choice. My lad asked me if I’d seen it only a couple of months ago. He’s 40 next month and had only just seen it.

Shane Meadows and Paddy Constantine, both exceptional!

Maybe some brave cynical soul could put a list of films based on type/category… Would 8 categories be too many I wonder… then
Vote and Pick out top (30 or 20 or 10 or 5 maybe)… put the list to one side.
Then move onto the next category… Do the same again, rinse and repeat until all 8 categories have been covered
Move onto a knockout phase then…?? whittle down to 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 choices in that category
Do the same across each sector…
Would be left with 8 categories with whatever select few numbers of nominated choice.
Then the real knockout/knockout stage could begin…
This would obviously determine the winning category…
Then pitch that winning category and number of films contained within, against an identical number of films chosen from every single film nominated within the process that singularly collected most votes… OR not :0)

Hey, its a Friday afternoon, if ya can’t prattle on and on on a day like today… then when can ya eh…
BTW… just ignore all of the above if it sounds like a load of Bo**ocks :0)
