I recommend reading the story too. If I remember correctly it’s a short story or a novella.
Treated myself to a cinema trip yesterday. Saw The Banshees of Inisherin. Dark, bleak, funny. Well worth a watch.
watched it in a hotel a few weeks back, it was a typecast RR movie.
To a degree, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
hometown boy, I have nothing against what he does. our son dressed up as deadpool this year and he’s never seen the movies
Big debate at work today about films. 2 of the guys insisting that Ready Player One was immense. About 3/4 through it. Yes, every reference to every film in history but seemingly at the expense of any kind of intelligent plot.
Im not a big fan of the comic book films, but appreciate this is big news
I think this is big on 2 levels. First is that they’ve accepted the franchise needs more direction and so are essentially copying the Fiege/Marvel model. The other side is it’s quite a coup to have landed Gunn to do it.
I read he’s going to try to create a more cohesive strategy around the entire collection of IP while still allowing the stand alone franchises to do their thing. That means a weird situation where the Patterson/Reeves version of Batman will allowed to continue outside of the Affleck version of Batman that will exist within the Gunnverse
Isn’t this just a reflection of how the comic industry has worked - running major story lines (Crisis, Secret Wars etc) alongside regular storylines and multiple titles for the most popular characters?
Not a comic person, but Id assume so. But establishing canon and continuity is a big part of the adaptations. Will people be able to deal with two separate iterations of Batman simultaneously? If the product is better than what DC have done so far then probably so.
Will be quite the job to sort out. Currently there are two Batmen but also two Jokers, but one of those Jokers does not have a Batman. That Joker does have a Harley Quinn (or will in the next film) but there is also another Harley Quinn who no longer has a Joker.
And that’s even before you get to the Flash who may yet still be facing jail time.
Plus Gunn’s Suicide Squad was a bit shit imo.
It was one of the worst supposedly serious films I’ve ever seen. It was like the pitch was “right, we fucked up the first one of these really badly. Lets have another go, and do it just as shit.”
Hah, I thought it was hilarious! Peacemaker being born from it was the real winner of that film, though. I doubt I’ll watch it again (there are not many films I (re)watch these days due to time constraints anyway) but I definitely look back upon it with positive feelings.
As for Gunn taking helm of DC’s cinematic universe(s), I’m all for it. He can’t do wrong in my eyes. I loved Reeves’ Batman and I think there’s incredible potential there for a film that would rival Nolan’s The Dark Knight in terms of a lasting emotional effect on audiences. That said, it really should have been placed into the same universe as Phillips’ Joker - imagine having a film with Pattinson and Phoenix in opposing leading roles…
I just reckon DC has much stronger source material than a film about people fighting a giant Starfish.
That was basically the intro to GOTG2. It wasn’t the main boss fight. While it also wasn’t a perfect film, at least it had a bit of heart and depth with Peter’s realization that Yondu was his dad and the reconciliation of Gamora and Nebula. I don’t remember anything like that in The Suicide Squad, but then I only saw it once.
I’m very much hoping Gunn will succeed, because while I love the MCU, I really enjoyed all the DC movies that I saw before Man of Steel, but have been mostly disappointed since. Even the ‘good’ ones haven’t been great But I did like Joker a lot.
Day Shift
Didn’t mind it at all, not usually a fan of zombie/vampire shit but I liked the whole gangsta’s fuck ‘‘em up shoot ‘em brap brap spin on it rather than your stereotypical run and scream. First time I’ve seen Dave Franco do something funny as the scared desk boy.
I often dont have time in the evening to watch movies and so on weekends if Im not doing anything and my partner isnt available I’ll make a point of watching one and purposefully pick something obscure she wouldn’t be interested in.
Last night I watched Inheritance with Simon Pegg an Emily from Emily in Paris and fuck me it was shit. I’m about 0-9 with this strategy and I can safely say I’ve likely learned nothing.
Don’t think I’ve ever watched a Simon Pegg movie properly after Shaun of the Dead & the Mission Impossibles, don’t find him or his work appealing in the slightest.
Watch this one. It wont change your mind.
I liked shaun of the dead and hot fuzz. Not a fan of his other ones although watched very little of his stuff (that accent in Star Trek ).
He was ok in band of brothers, although it wasnt a major part.
