Skinheadsā jeans of choice, if I remember rightly.
There was that⦠but more if you were at an away match, or anywhere else in the country, anyone wearing Flemings Jeans, was undoubtedly from Liverpool. The denim material they were made from, was so thick and rigid, it was virtually impossible for the jeans to bend at the knees when walking. You had to walk in a kind of āGoose-Steppingā fashion until they had been through the wash cycle about twenty times to soften them up a tad :0)
Woolton is meant to be one of the posher areas. Walton Breck Road less so.
Brought back a lot of memories. My hall of residence and places I rented during the studying days were all closed to Sefton Park. Ducklings on the ponds. Fireworks at the park.
Thanks alot RedWhippet. This is such interesting fact about the local culture.

There is thisā¦
Woolton Village in Liverpool was voted the North Westās Best Place to Live in The Sunday Timesā annual guide in early 2025, recognized for its vibrant village center with independent shops, strong community feel, excellent schools, green spaces, and Beatles history. Judges praised its walkability, family-friendly atmosphere, and charming amenities like coffee shops, a fromagerie, and traditional pubs.
Key Reasons for the Award:
- Vibrant Village Centre: Home to independent coffee shops, cocktail bars, and The Elephant Pub.
- Community & Walkability: A strong sense of community with most amenities within walking distance.
- Family-Friendly: Features great schools, parks, and nearby woodlands like Woolton Woods.
- Beatles History: Known as John Lennonās hometown and the place where Lennon and McCartney first met.
- Green Spaces: Offers access to beautiful parks and natural areas.
Although, in fairness, there is a nice sports club on the Walton Breck Road.
You know. If i had to move out of London, South Liverpool would be my 1st choice. I like Allerton, Mossley Hill area. Also, area near Sefton Park.
I will check out Woolton next time i am there.
I need to be walking distance to the nearest station, bus stop. Also, not far from the airport.
Steve Schirripa was excited to find out thereās a gap in his looming tour schedule that means he can spend more time in Liverpool ![]()
The Sopranos legend is coming to Merseyside later this month for a live version of his hit podcast with co-star Michael Imperioli.
Talking Sopranos arrives at the Liverpool Empire on February 19 and sees the two actors in conversation as they share behind-the-scenes stories from the iconic HBO show that is widely regarded as the greatest TV series of all time.
The upcoming tour of the podcast is particularly special for Steve, as he told the ECHO in an exclusive interview how it will be his first-ever trip to the UK.
The closest the 68-year-old has ever come to these shores before was during a trip to Dublin, and he canāt wait to experience the different cultures across the UK on the tour this month.
The New Yorker said: āIām very much looking forward to it. We start our tour in Belfast, then weāre hitting Glasgow, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Nottingham, and Birmingham. We sold out the London Palladium twice so we added a third show. Iām very much excited.ā
The live show has been a long time coming, as Talking Sopranos was initially scheduled to tour the UK in 2020, before it had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The cultural impact of The Sopranos is felt all over the world, but Steve knows it is particularly popular in this country and has been touched by the number of people who have reached out ahead of his visit with offers to eat at their restaurant or drink in their bars.
However, Steve insists he wants to go with the flow and take each city as it comes during his stay. He said: āIām open, and I have no plans, so weāll play it by ear. Iām looking forward to walking around and seeing whatās going on.ā
The Bobby Baccalieri actor told the ECHO the crew have a full 24 hours free in Liverpool the day before their scheduled show on February 19, which gives them more time to explore the city. The actor is excited to find out what Liverpool has to offer but laughed that he might need to take some time adjusting to get the hang of the Scouse accent during his time in Merseyside.
He said: āWhen I watch TV from the UK and Scotland, I have to put the captions on so I can read it because I have a hard time understanding. You have a thick accent.ā
Fortunately for Steve, he can rely on the expertise of his co-star, Michael, as the Christopher Moltisanti actor is a big fan of Liverpool and has previously performed here with his band.
He said: āMichael is very much looking forward to it. He is much more of a traveller than I am. All I know [about Liverpool] like everyone else, is The Beatles and The Cavern Club. I really have no idea, but sometimes the less I know, the better.ā
One place the actor is keen to check out is Derekās sandwich shop, which is heavily influenced by The Sopranos, as the menu is chock-full of references to the series, with a gabagool and a Moltisanti among the items on offer. When told about the shop during his chat with the ECHO, Steve said: āI gotta make sure I hit that, for sure.ā
