The Manchester United Thread: That's It. That's the Joke (Part 1)

If I was a manyoo fan I don’t know which would concern me more. The fact that the club have said Ten Hag can’t bring in Steve Maclaren, or the fact that he wants that colossal tit anywhere near the training ground in the first place.

Back page.

Not really a newspaper. It’s something called a tabloid, which is a kind of comic.

This one isn’t even the worst.

“The good thing - one of the few - is it’s crystal clear. You don’t even need glasses to see the problems.”

“Now it’s only about how you can solve them. Not minor cosmetic things. This is an open heart operation. If everyone realises this has to happen and works together, it doesn’t need to take years.”

“It can happen within one year. Other clubs have shown it’s possible within three transfer windows.”

Oh Ralf. Just another United staff member fooling the fans into thinking there is a short term solution.

He is 100% talking about Liverpool. And it’s clear be has decided to completely ignore how we have been chipping back on our performance-wage problems that have existed since the early 2010’s. I don’t even think United have identified it as a problem, let alone trying to fix it.

Here’s a table I have developed showing the points collected across all competitions and how that compares to the wage bill. IA = Inflation adjusted wage bill (using something that I found on SBNation showing up to 2017 but better than nothing). PP10m = points collected per £10m of wages. The one with IA is the key one.

Primary Comps Secondary Comps
PL CL PP10m PP10m (IA) EL FAC EFL Other PP10m PP10m (IA) Wages(£m) Wages (IA)(£m)
LFC 2009-10 63 7 5.8 2.1 15 1 3 1.6 0.6 121 331
LFC 2010-11 58 4.3 1.7 28 2.1 0.8 135 345
LFC 2011-12 52 4.4 1.6 15 19 2.9 1.0 119 330
LFC 2012-13 61 4.6 1.8 23 3 3 2.2 0.9 132 331
LFC 2013-14 84 5.8 2.9 6 3 0.6 0.3 144 289
LFC 2014-15 62 5 4.0 2.4 3 14 8 1.5 0.9 166 274
LFC 2015-16 60 2.9 2.1 25 5 11 2.0 1.4 208 291
LFC 2016-17 76 3.8 3.8 4 12 0.8 0.8 200 200
LFC 2017-18 75 31 5.1 5.1 3 0.1 0.1 208 208
LFC 2018-19 97 25 3.9 3.9 0.0 0.0 310 310
LFC 2019-20 99 13 3.4 3.4 7 4 9 0.6 0.6 325 325
LFC 2020-21 69 20 2.8 2.8 3 3 0.2 0.2 314 314
United 2018-19 66 13 2.4 2.4 9 0.3 0.3 332 332
United 2019-20 66 2.3 2.3 26 13 10 1.7 1.7 284 284
United 2020-21 74 9 2.6 2.6 17 9 9 1.1 1.1 323 323

Taking into account United’s wage bill rose 23% this season and their points tally from the primary competitions will have dropped, their points per £10m wages will drop below 1.9 after this season which is us almost 10 years ago.

I think its important to point out that wages aren’t that important for United in the sense that they have literally got money to burn, but its the influence this has on their transfer targets. How do you target players that will fight for the club if the club presents itself as the final destination or the retirement destination? Sancho ‘made it’ by getting on a big wage at United and he doesn’t really look bothered. This is Varane and Ronnie’s retirement gift. There is no reward for hard work at that club so they will continue to stink with players downing tools once the going gets even slightly tough.

I am absolutely in love with Ralf’s delusion.

I see United in the bottom half at Christmas and the new Everton at best next May. They will probably recover somewhat in two to three years.
