Just watching on TV, loved him as an actor, in one of my fave films and a NZ one, Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Probably best remembered for Jurassic park.

Sad loss seemed a great guy too.

Dead Calm was the first movie I came across him back in the 80s/90s - was a terrific movie and always kept an eye out for him since.

I think Omen III was the first thing I remember him in. A really chilling performance. Oddly enough, I almost rewatched Event Horizon on Saturday because it came up in the suggestions after watching Sunshine. A brilliant actor and a real loss.

I always remember him in his role as the villain in Chevy Chase’s version of the Invisible Man.

I can’t believe it. I think we spoke about how he had announced being cancer-free just a few weeks or months ago, I was ecstatic about that news. One of my favourite actors of all time, a true horror film legend. In the Mouth of Madness, Possession, Event Horizon - take your pick about his best horror film performance but the first one is my favourite horror film of all time. Rest in peace, this really, really sucks.

The Guardian have put their list of Sam Neill’s best roles:

I’m not sure whether I agree with the ranking, but there are a few there that I forgot about. ā€œThe Dishā€ was a really wonderful film as was ā€œHunt for the Wilderpeopleā€. It’s great when an actor can flip between big budget Hollywood movies to independent local projects so seamlessly.

A cry in the dark would have been the first movie I seen him in but I did love ā€œthe dishā€, only recently rewatching it with my daughter who also loved it.

Trying to remember which one I saw first, but the first 2 of his films I saw were Evil Angels and Hunt For The Red October, but can’t remember which order I saw them. I suspect HFTO which was more child suitable content.

Sad to hear this news. A very good actor indeed, equally comfortable in big budget Hollywood stuff, and also smaller films. He always came across as a good bloke, too. RIP.

Merlin was my favourite of his and he was one of my favorite actors of all time

I’d forgotten about him playng Damien Thorn.

Although understandably, that isn’t really something a normal parent would allow a child to watch until their mid-teens
