Anyone around my age would remember the International Cavaliers matches televised on BBC on a sunday afternoon in the 1960s. A team of all stars against county sides. Sir Gary was a regular member of that side. Great entertainment.

Iconic cricketer Garfield Sobers dubbed ‘best all rounder of all time’ dies
Iconic cricket star Garfield Sobers has died just days away from his 90th birthday. The Barbadian all rounder took an amazing 235 wickets during a long career. His best-ever score of 365 not out came against Pakistan in 1958 – a record in first-class cricket until Brian Lara broke it in 1994.

I got to know him when I was so young that I knew very little about Cricket, and there were very little Cricket around. Still, I was awed. He was that good.

I went to see England vs West Indies with my Grandfather at the Oval in 1973. Sobers came in to bat and we all expected fireworks, but he was run out for 10. The crowd roared and I jumped up in excitement. Only my Grandad stayed in his seat. “I’m so sorry about that” he said, “I really wanted you to see Sobers in full flow”.
He was right of course, now I wish I’d seen that. One of the greatest sights in cricket, no doubt.

Special K was before my time as a Liverpool fan
only knew him a manager,
but he always came across as a very likable and honest man,
he was one of the good guys of the beautiful game
Kevin packed a lot into his life and his family should be proud of him

Kevin Keegan was the first player I remember as our star striker. He and Toshack seemed like gods. When he left, I could barely comprehend it. He was all I knew up front. How can you possibly replace him? Well we did. It turned into a lesson of looking to the future.
We could still see him playing for England. That Christmas my aunt from Glasgow bought me the Kevin Keegan annual:
I don’t think she knew that he had left but I still read the annual back to back. I suspect it had actually been written before he announced he was leaving.
