藤子不二雄Ⓐ RIP. I watched Q-Taro, Ninja Hattori and some others when I was a kid.
Also behind Doraemon. One of my favourite characters.
Generous tipper, surprisingly fierce drinker, an absolutely wonderful, witty, bitchy, kind woman.
By the way, that’s Bill Hicks.
He was another who died young (not drug related).
He had a lot of interesting stuff to say, but was very dodgy sexually.
He was dodgy sexually?
You never saw his ‘Goat Boy’ routine?
Well, yeah, that was uncomfortable, but contextually harmless. Saying he was dodgy sexually implies something more sinister.
He did routines about his attraction to underage girls which were borderline in those days and wouldn’t be acceptable now.
Really? I don’t think I’ve ever heard those.
He was also satirising corporate America, advertising, etc. He wants a “pink, candy floss pussy”, etc.
He was an idol of mine when I was much younger and much nicer so maybe I’m over protective.
I’d agree a lot of his material is dated and edgy for the sake of being edgy, and I’ve grown out of most of it, but it’s not fair to suggest there was anything dodgy about the guy because of a couple mostly satirical comments.
I agree that 90% of his stuff is great and he often said exactly what needed to be said, but joking about being a lecherous old goat lusting after young girls is the kind of thing that is more than uncomfortable post Savile/Glitter/Epstein etc.
Sure but humour is contextual. Where the borderline between funny and creepy/unacceptable/in bad taste etc changes depending on the social, political, cultural etc mores and what is happening at the time. Obviously what is acceptable to do also changes but humour often relies upon pushing up against these boundaries so it is almost inevitable that some ‘jokes’ from different eras just won’t translate.
Ergo it’s harsh to criticise a comedian with a mainstream following for failing to meet the mores of a different era.
I was too young to remember much about Saville. As a kid in the 80s he was part of my childhood, but you dont really hear the things he’s saying. You just know him as the guy who does Jim’ll Fix It and does charity fun runs. By the timeI was old enough to pick up on things he had already been elevated to that institution status we give older stars in the UK where again you kind of ignore what they’re doing because their status is based on everyone just agreeing they’ve done great things.
But there is a new documentary released on netflix over there in the US this week and fuck me he was wildly, brazenly odd. Just the constant stream of lecherous jokes about fucking anything with a pulse, including liking young girls and not being safe to be around them. This was a personality he seemed intent to cultivate, like it wasn’t something you had to interrogate his comments to find the problems. He was loudly broadcasting it. None of it makes any sense at all.
You can draw somewhat of a comparison to someone like Jim davidson to say times were just different. Davidson’s stand up is wildly racist and misogynistic, but he was for a period one of Britain’s most reliable family TV presenters. But Davidson never did those themes while presenting big break so it least allowed people to keep the distinction between his two characters. Saville would go on family on TV and act like someone you wouldnt leave alone with your kid, tell you that youd be wrong to leave him alone with them, and then we collectively left him alone with a nations kids. For 40 years.
Yeah, I saw that a couple of days ago and have felt dirty ever since. Vomit inducing, and they didn’t even say everything.
It’s not hindsight, I always hated him, even as a kid, and I never understood why he was always on telly.
Disgusting filth.
Damn that is sad news. I was wondering why you posted their clip in the music thread but now makes sense.
Yeah, I absolutely loved them as a kid.
True Aussie greats.
It took me years to get them, but it was only when Springstein did that cover of Just Like Fire Would that I thought, hang on, if The Boss likes them enough to release a cover of their work, then maybe I need to look into them a bit more and I am disappointed that I missed out on years of great music
