The R.I.P. thread

I just saw this list of Maggie Smiths films ranked (the list was done in 2019). There are a few I haven’t seen, but some real gems in there.

This is more a statement of my own age, but seeing the 1999 pic of her and Dench and simultaneously thinking “that is pretty recent” and “look how young they look” has my head spinning.

Wonderful actress and that list gives me a few I’ll have to get to over the next few months

RIP Kris Kristofferson - He seemed to have had a full and very interesting life - The kind of guy whose company would be welcomed into your own

Mt. Mutombo had died? Awww, that’s no age, 58.

I remember watching the Houston Rockets, and that famous wag of the finger, as he blocked and shut down the opposition.

Seemed a really nice fella in addition to his tremendous presence on the basketball court.

RIP

Only catching up with the Kristofferson news now so will repeat the story I told when Toby Keith died earlier in the year.

About 15 years ago Ethan Hawke told a story of being a concert celebrating Willie Nelson’s birthday. He was behind the stage mingling with Willie and several of his friends like Ray Charles and Kristofferson when a brash, somewhat out of place country star, sauntered over thinking he was the big shit. He looked at Kristofferson and said something along the lines of “OK chris, lets have fun out there but leave the lefty shit out today, ok?” Hawke said Willie immediately made a “oh you gone done fucked up now, country boy” as Kristofferson immediately rose up and made it clear that he cared nothing for the faux patriotism theme of the more modern brand of faux country Keith represented, and he, a military veteran who had killed for his country, would say whatever the fuck he wanted. Despite having 20 years on a guy who was pushing 70 himself by that time, Keith reportedly just cowered in response understanding he was one misstep from experiencing first hand Kristofferson’s brand of being a “dove with claws” and being required to go on stage to sing through missing teeth. Hawke had long refused to name the “country star” on the receiving end of Kristofferson’s ire, but rumours it was Keith were confirmed earlier in the year after he died.

The guy was a proper dude, and Sunday Morning Coming Down is one my favourite songs ever.

Didn’t realise he wrote “Bobby Magee”. Not sure I’ve heard his version or if there indeed was one - his take would have been interesting in the sense that the Joplin version is pretty darn good and seems to capture what he was aiming for with the song.

ps - was sort of on par with finding out Prince wrote “Nothing compare to u”

It sounds like it could be an accident.

England are actually playing Greece at Wembley tonight. I expect that they will have some acknowledgement of his death.
