The Referees or The Twelfth Man

He has to tell everyone through the worst Rag there is to find out who he is, nope, for me he is just trying to get sympathy whilst getting paid handsomely.

I figure you can either ask for sympathy OR money when you apologize publicly
 but NOT BOTH.

So since I gather he took money, he’s on his own for sympathy as far as i’m concerned. That and reading the transcripts, while I can understand the pressures he describes, he comes across more as making excuses for his actions that taking responsibility and truly feeling remorseful
i.e. he’s sorry he got caught, not the that he snorted miles of fine columbian.

Good luck to him being gay and all. Live your life fella, and love who you love, Nobody (of sane mind) has any issue whatsoever with that.

The problem is he is a grade A twat, gay or not.

He’s a wrong ‘un.

Barney Ronay has written an article in the Guardian about this. I thought he raised a few fair points, although I realise that I haven’t read the original S*n article and never will. As, I assume, is the same with everyone else on this forum.

I would say nobody of reasonable mind.

I wonder if he has a prescription or certificate to say he has mental issues
or is it just a convenient shield he has decided to hide behind.
Life is hard, fucking hard
anyone that thinks differently is sleepwalking through life - this twat is opting out of owning his statements, by any methods he can that come to mind.
We all make bad decisions, we wouldn’t be human if we didn’t
This guy made some horrendous ones
Again, he needs to own them

Thats the main issue for me.
By using mental health as a reason/excuse he is demeaning the actual struggles of people who do suffer.

Exactly

On a much smaller scale

he has experience of footballers that feign a head injury getting the benefit of the doubt - hey ho, why not play the same game

I don’t see why acknowleding your own struggles is demeaning on other people.

Based on his situation:

  • gay referee (do you know many of them?) fearing of coming out in the social media age
  • high pressure of his job
  • well documented use of drugs, in a not recreative setting

I can very well imagine he has mental breakdown/struggles.

In his apology, he does say the coming out part is not in itself enough, aknowledging other shortcomings. (Even if he doesn’t properly address them)

He can both be a cunt and face real mental health struggles.

I dont understand people claiming to be interested in supporting mental health issues only to summarily reject what Coote is talking about. Football is a field where public abuse is a real problem. It is one renowned for gay people remaining closeted for not wanting their identity being used as part of the abuse they receive. Pretty much everyone who eventually came out has spoken about the mental distress of living that life and many of them have spoken about the fall into substance abuse as a way to self medicate to deal with that.

None of this changes that he was a shit ref. None of it excuses the specific things he said in the video. It certainly seems like as a person he is a prick. But we dont need to reject the other part of the story to still hold onto those ideas about him.

Head of the Spanish Federation suggests being able to employ prem refs in La Liga to increase the quality of officiaing

Important context for those who believe the issue of perceived bad refereeing is specific to the PGMOL and the domestic issues in our game.

Loaded statement thats totally out of order.
I’m not sure who its aimed at or why but I feel it needs a response.

I am interested in mental health issues, and I am not just claiming to be. I actively support people struggling to discuss or understand their sexuality. I have been involved in addiction counselling.

If Coote is suffering with any issues he should be afforded empathy and support, despite previous misdemeanours.
That is beyond question.

However
he diluted his “apology” by using his struggles as an excuse. He could have just said that he owns the actions and discussed his issues at another juncture. By conflating the two he is reducing his personal responsibility. Do you understand this?

He diluted his apology by doing an interview with that fucking rag. Its beyond comprehension that he doesn’t know the history. An apology to Klopp in that rag? He could have gone elsewhere. He chose this.

I worked with many people in achieving an understanding of the pain their behaviours brought to others. Rarely did they ever attempt to profit for themselves in their quest to right their wrongs.
Coote did.

Your opening gambit is out of order and unnecessary.

I don’t like innacurate assumptions made by people who think they know more than they actually do.

If you don’t like that, well

They are not assumptions. They are responses to things directedly stated.

Nope.

Some day you will learn a bit of humility.
Not today though.

The most important part of your statement

“I dont understand”

Thats the kernel. You don’t.

Ok

As I understand it, The S*n has previous for threatening to out people whether they give a story or not. Same could have happened here, not that it excuses Coote, but it may be that he had little choice in which outlet ran the story.

I wouldn’t wipe my arse with that publication or any related publications if you paid me 5 million quid and promised to have Margo Robbie sit naked on my face for half an hour telling me what a naughty boy I am.

Ok.

I’ll convince her to add an extra 5 minutes, but not a second longer
