The contact on Gakpo, in the box, for a penalty claim is a non starter because the ball had gone before the contact. You donāt get penalties awarded under those circumstances.

Donāt often agree with Keane but he sums it up perfectly there. Just be consistent ffs or tell us that opponents will be getting those penalties and we wonāt. That way we know. For me, neither of them are pens because the play was already completed and contact after incidental. The actual rule says that for a penalty to be awarded after the play then the contact has to be reckless.

Yeah it was late enough and so needless that I donāt you could complain if it was a red. And that drives home the absurdity of the contrast with last week given how trivial the contact was with neco

Whether you agree with the decision last week given how soft the actual contact looked, the argument done fans have tried to make that the ball was already played and so cannot be a penalty is a poor argument. The rules are quite clear that a penalty decision does not get influenced by whether the ball has already been played or not.
This Cody non-decision is an absolute joke though. Fans want to see consistency. You canāt have consistency if the on-field refs are refereeing very very differently from one game to the next, and on top of that setting the rules so that VAR is so light-touch as to be useless.
If VAR had the power to intervene in this situation, not only could we receive much greater consistency from one match to the next, but it would also expose any corruption within the decision making: if VAR can overturn the on field ref and they donāt on a blatant call like Gakpoās, then the alarm bells should be ringing. Right now the whole Ref-VAR dynamic is a circular reference PGMOL are using to shield themselves from scrutiny. Scum.

Whether Gakpo had just āsplit-secondā released the ball or not, or whether he had released it 5mins earlier and was stood thereā¦ if a guy comes clattering into him, and itās in the boxā¦ then it has to be a foul, thus penaltyā¦
