Every game we see will just make that penalty decision against Ali look even more of a joke. There won’t be another like it all season, unless it’s against us, of course. Of all the wrestling, arm yanking, barging and shoving you see in the box, Ali’s faint touch on Neco’s boot amounted to nothing…except an invite to players to dive even more.

The Allison “foul” on Neco was less of a penalty claim than the actual foul on Gakpo. But we won the match and there is no need to overanalyse?

Did anyone notice the astonishing sequence at the end of the Arsenal vs Chelsea game when after the final whistle Arteta and the 4th offical greeted each other with broad grins and actually high-fived in celebration. I couldn’t believe it.

I thought VAR was there to correct game changing bad decisions, not confirm them.
The bigger point with this is that it is similar to the idea of handballs not being penalties if the arms are in a natural position. Here the goalkeeper is in a natural position, blocking a potential shot or forcing a player to take a sub-optimal one. He hasn’t gone for the attacking player or prevented him playing the ball. If there is ever a case for a “coming together” then this is it.

The penalty should not have stood but game changing decisions like fucking penalties, are not something VAR should be getting themselves involved in? I think that’s the logic.
How hell can football adopt a system to bring a second ratifying opinion into games and then be so utterly shit scared of using it.

It’s contradiction in terms. If the decision was wrong then of course it passes the threshold for VAR intervention. Making incorrect decisions correct is what it’s there for ffs. Or is this a ‘Hmmmm, you’ve seen them given’ VAR clause?

The idea of threshold for intervention is not a bad idea. We don’t want VAR getting involved in everything, stopping the game over minor inconsequential fouls.
But when they talk of threshold on penalty decision, it’s an exercise in gaslighting. VAR should bring with it an expectation you fucking get those right. Even if you accept that there is a degree of interpretation to penalty decisions, we’re dealing with a penalty that you just never see given. The suggestion that ‘well, it probably isn’t a pen but once the ref has given it you can’t overturn it’ is bollocks. They are never given.

It feels like belligerent compliance.
The core principle of VAR was it should be used in a way that reduces the number of big mistakes while respecting two key elements: most decisions are neither right nor wrong (so dont get involved in those in the grey area), and the flow of the game is essential to maintain (so limit how often and for how long the game is interupted). This is the basis of the light touch principle. But what they do is focus so much on the protocol that was in put place to try to satisfy that and then sneeringingly tell us they are only doing what they have been asked to when it produces terrible outcomes.
Telling us that VAR wouldnt get involved in the Mac-Doku incident, despite admitting that the ref (Oliver?) did not have a great view of it, because fans say they want big decisions to stay with the ref on the pitch, is a farce.
