The Rugby Union Thread

I watched the first half of this before I had to put the kids to bed. I thought it was an excellent summary and hadn’t realised the time England had to set (I didn’t watch it live). He makes very good points. I still think Gauzere could have done a bit more to ensure England were set before putting time back on but he’s right that upon viewing the fuller replay England really were far too casual.

Squidge is very good. I like the subtle things he highlights on the tactical subtleties as teams attack and what they are trying to achieve etc. I find it immensely fascinating, like a very physical version of chess.

It’s not really Gauzere’s job to check if England were set. Perhaps there’s a ethical type argument for it but i suspect that Farrell had got a little bit too much in his face. He should be above that though. It’s tough but England were caught out twice.

I’ve also found another channel which goes even further on that stuff, even down to analysing how particular players operate - such as a scrum half’s passing technique / style.

Ah Eddie when will you realise Billy is a fat and lazy liability. The game has moved on from him taking contact and doing nothing else all game.

He looks really out of shape to me. He isn’t back in shape after those injury lay offs.

14 penalties conceded again. England really need to cut that out.

Gees what a first 20 minutes in the France vs Wales game. 2 tries a piece and it’s a 100 miles an hour of utterly fantastic attacking rugby from both sides.

Well, this is starting to look good for the Welsh

Crikey what a game that was.

Mental ending, i’d posted the grimmace as France were pushing for the last try after a load of hold ups, fully expecting Wales to hold on.
I’m not sure if France can do the bonus point win with 21 pts margin next week, Scotland should make it closer then that i feel. Will be a nervous watch for Wales

After that, I’m not hugely bothered to be honest. It’s not sour grapes, more of winning the championship after losing your last game and then having to wait a week is just weird. A little hollow maybe.

I’m just here a little stunned at what was an utterly bonkers game of rugby. I’m gutted but not really down beat by it. Kind of in shock I think. Such an incredible game. I dont think I’ve ever seen a game where the ball crossed the try line that often and so many questions for the TMO.

He has been like this for awhile now, yes injuries have had a part to play but the team ends up carrying him… Huge difference when you have 3 back row’s who play the breakdown well v’s 2.

Jones has kept faith in far too many since the World Cup, Youngs is another one… His kicking game is utterly woeful… You compare him to other scrum halves he isn’t in the same league in any part of his game.

The coaching set up has gone backwards, especially the forwards since Proudfoot came in. Imagine being lauded as a “scrum specialist” and we give away 3 penalities from the scrum in 1 half.

As you say, another 14 penalties, every game we have double the opponent has and it’s always when we are gaining a foothold. The blame is at Jones’ feet, he’s failed to sort this.

Our 9/10 axis is just horrible, when you watch it v’s Irelands it shows how far behind we are.

The fact we came out despite being so far behind 2nd half v’s Ireland and kept up the same dogshit kicking game which had failed all first half points directly at a coach who has ran out of ideas. England used to bully teams with physicality, teams now match us and even beat us at the gain line… Eddie said we would be using the time between the WC and 6 nations to transition to a more attacking team, no evidence of that yet…

Youngs maybe but in Ford England have an excellent 10. Plus their attacking play this tournament has been fantastic when they build up a head of steam. Getting into that position has been the problem.

I’m guessing, but I wonder of Eddie is trying to move England away from their traditional game a little and they are struggling to adjust. The whole Saracens thing hasn’t helped either to be fair. I say that because Englands attacking play in the opposition half has been damn decent at times but with everything else there seems to be something missing. It seems to me that if England have a poor first 10 minutes in the game where they either fail to score or struggle to contain the opposition they look lost after that.

Congratulations Wales. Well deserved

Another hell of a game there between France and Scotland.

I must admit the quality of games in this years Championship has been fantastic. It’s been great to watch.

For sure. Both Wales and France battling it out for the championship and both losing a game to last moment tries, Wales just losing out on a slam. Great tournament this year ok.

Indeed the tension has been fantastic but it’s been the quality of the rugby that has got me excited. Up until this season defenses have been dominant. I felt that has swung a bit this year with teams and coaching staff beginning to concede that you need to score tries to win games.

Pretty much all teams have gone at it this year as well. Scotland who have until recently been pretty blunt in attack have found something that works for them. Even Italy, have some tiny green shoots of development showing.

And to top it any Championship where England finish 5th has to be celebrated. :joy:
