This has been my concern too. As Ukraine have fought valiantly and developed their technology, in particular their drone technology, they have gained the ability to hurt Russia in many ways, deep into Russian territory. It has been so heartening to see them do this.
But what will that prompt Russia to do?
It should be a sign to try to find a way out of the war, but instead, the concern is always there that they will escalate in a way that would be devastating for Ukraine and put down a significant marker for the West as to what they are willing to do to achieve their aims. Ugh.
This can also be interpreted as Putin getting fed up and becoming desperate. Bombing cultural landmarks won’t bring victory, but it will bring attention to what he’s been doing and reinforce the support for Ukraine.
It’s another disgusting and reprehensible move, but it might also indicate that the pressure is starting to get him.
