The TV Thread redux

Havent seen any mention of it yet, but the Dune series launched on HBO on Sunday. I’m going to bank a few up before I start watching.

What? Farage is in it?

Arcane ending didn’t live up to the high standards set, but not a bad end and overall a very good show. Plus, beautifully animated.

Couple episodes left to finish off S2 of Tulsa King.

I prefer it to the first. Better story and has that edge to it which the first didn’t really bring, maybe I’m just not a huge fan of biker gangs…the chemistry between the newly formed “gang” has developed and now it feels more like an intense battle of words and exchange of messages to see who controls what territory.

I am watching The Silo. Loved season 1, but after having watched episode 1 of season 2 now with my cousin, I fear its probably not going to be very good at all. Episode 1 had my alarm bells going off…

i was happy with it…

the biggest online criticism is that it was rushed and should have been fleshed out better… the criticism seems very basic to me, like an AI generated critique… if the show has a fast pace, call it rushed…if its too slow, call it padded…if it closes all the arcs out, call it too neat…if it fails to close out the arcs, call it out for not attending to all its characters…

for a show that ran two seasons only, it was quite perfect, from a street crime mini rama to universal god concept, within 18 episodes…

if you read the theories, the interesting one is the

SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT

the last three minutes have a few theories around what actually happened - online theories are easy to look up

i was really really happy with everything…if i could have changed anything i would have kept it away from the whole god concept…but thats tin tacs…the whole journey was amazing, i urge anyone who hasnt seen it to watch it, and start from season one…

Watch the first episode of the Dune series, confusing so far, looks good though.

Silo is the best dystopian series since Fallout – and proves that Apple TV Plus is now my favorite streaming service

Story by Lucy Buglass

Why Silo seriously impressed me

The series follows a group of citizens who live inside a giant underground bunker. They’ve built an entire civilization down there and have been told they should not leave, because the world outside is desolate and, most importantly, the air is toxic to breathe. The caveat here is that you are allowed to leave, with the permission of the silo’s ruling council – just don’t expect to be let back in again. Once you’re out, you’re out forever .

But what happens when residents who are curious, or unhappy, or both, start to question what they’ve been told about the silo, and about the world outside.? Is the world beyond the bunker’s steel doors really toxic, or is it an elaborate deception to keep the inhabitants compliant? Well, Silo explores exactly that, and does so in a way that had me absolutely glued to my television screen. It keeps you guessing, and when you think you’ve figured stuff out, you’re probably wrong! It’s beautifully shot, very well acted, and works hard to keep you engaged. Watching the show is akin to a tense and claustrophobic nightmare, as the silo’s populace tries to navigate both the bunker itself, and their unorthodox circumstances.

I had a brilliant time watching this series, and it’s one compelling reason why I won’t be cancelling my Apple TV Plus subscription any time soon.

Apple TV has for me so had the most consistent quality of shows so far of the streaming channels.

Which makes it all the more baffling that Time Bandits was on there?

It probably looked good on paper. There have been a few shows done on a similar theme including Horrible Histories and it’s various spin-offs, Mel Brook’s History of the World, and Sketch History in Germany.

I think they tried to do this, but the casting was wrong and the writing just wasn’t good enough. I don’t think anyone actually sets out to make crap telly.

Oh absolutely, it wasn’t the idea - I love the original movie and would be all over a well done tv show. But as you say casting and writing were both poor.

Yes, season 1 was thrilling and I loved it. Time will tell in season 2. I didn’t enjoy the first episode of season 2 though. It gave me “Lost” wibes. But that was just the first episode, so too early to judge, but its an odd decision, I think, to have an episode where nothing much happens wiyh focus on flashbacks , as the first of a season.

One problem is lack of legacy content so there is much less to watch on it than everyone else has, but in terms of originals it’s doing well.

I watched Disclaimer the other week. Despite SBC trying to ruin it with his acting, it was good.

I’m not that hopeful. I loved S1, but even then it felt like there were a couple of periods where they were spinning their wheels with pointless scenes. That is often a sign on a high concept show like this that they have to lean on filler content because they are short of actual plot ideas. Shows like that often start unraveling once you get the renewal for S2 and the show becomes more about how they fix the generator than unravelling to core mystery (see S2 Outer Range)

I read the books after watching season 1…there is a lot of meat left on the bone lets say. There are 3 books, and season one was about half of the first book.

The reveal in the books and how the author did it works in written form…Let’s see if they can pull it off in the show.

There are reasons for the flashbacks. The entire 2nd book was a written in a different time period than the first…not sure they are going to do that in the show. But the books jump around in time a bit. I’m very curious how they handle it.

It isn’t like Lost because the source material is there and already finished. It’s how they get the concepts onto the screen that will make or break the show.

The last two episodes were a clear drop in quality imo. Still a top notch show, and didn’t end badly, but didn’t end strongly either. It lost its way in the last two episodes and ended as safely as possible, which for a show as interesting as Arcane is not a good thing.

… you actually read online criticism.

Not sure about @Redbj
But I try to stay out of in match threads…

i disagree with the quality drop, ecept to concede that wrapping anything up of this magnitude would always feel a bit hollow once completed…but theres enough tied up and enough loose ends for me to be happy with it…

i might be just caught up in the moment, the kids are at an age where they are getting into it, and we all sit down and watch it together…so theres that…and theres also a fair effort from myself to try to see the best in (good) productions…in the last few years…(maybe post GOT which was an absolute shit show)…theres seems alot of weight and time being spent disecting shows to the nth degree, valid criticisms maybe, but they all seem to ignore completely the open endedness of a fictional TV program and not everything can be cleaned up within a neat 1-3 hrs…

the only real issue i had was Vander reviving himself one last time which operated WAY outside the lore…the rest i was cool with…

anything that gave us the ending to S1E3 and S2E6, along with so much other magic, earns a bit of leeway with me…

not to mention the absolutely spectacular artwork throughout, and the chage of artistic styles to suit plot points,(the nostaligic water colours etc etc)

not a bad soundtrack either, im not huge on the faster stuff, but the slower ballads were amazing, and amazingly timed…

i admit my bias, as it was something i watched with the kids and we all liked, last show to do that was probably clone wars a few years ago…
