The other big plus is that the Dr and the new companion are together for the adventures, last season they were separated for most of them. Limits the amount we see them develop and how they interact with each other, which was the biggest strength of their Christmas episode.
Ruby is back for some of the episodes this season I believe and it’d be good to see her actually interact with the doctor more. Also looking forward to how she interacts with Belinda.
The first batch of 3 were fascinating. And if you know where they are going with these season RE Ghormon, it was tantalizingly introduced. But my biggest take away is Ben Miles has aged incredibly well
I’ve only seen the first episode, but I already feel comfortable recommending The Eternaut on Netflix.
It’s an Argentinian adaptation of a 1950s graphic novel about people surviving an alien invasion, which is kicked off with a deadly event that kills anyone caught outside when it hits. I’ve read that the graphic novel is what inspired Robert Kirkman to create The Walking Dead.
First episode was gripping, and the aliens haven’t even shown up yet! I think Netflix may have knocked this one out of the park.
A very good series about the Vietnam War on Netflix released at the same time as the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon (heard the fireworks and parades were pretty awesome).
Accounts from both sides and the Americans. Many stories I have never heard. I know there are many Americans and people interested in history and politics on TAN, and I think you should have a watch.
Edit: a review if you decide to watch this series:
I got annoyed by the end of it. And if they wanted to drive home that the US was the bad guys, should’ve mentioned China and Pol Pot in 1978-79 than just washing out with ‘we normalised relationship 20 years after 1975’. Why did it take so long, huh?
Stranger Things prequel play ‘The First Shadow’ live at the London Phoenix theatre. With an original story by The Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne (Adolescence) and Kate Trefry, and directed for the stage by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) the 2024 Olivier Award Winner is now booking until November 2025
Sadly it seems like Feists’ Riftwar Cycle series has been cancelled. No idea why yet, although with him and Janny Wurts retaining strong control over the series, maybe the studios vision strayed too far from the books
Anyway, I’m fucking gutted as this would have been even better than GoT had it been made.
Finished Black Mirror 7.
Episodes 1 and 5 were the best for me. The Callister finale is good, but not really my genre.
I’ve always found the series patchy, as is probably inevitable with this format, but there’s usually just enough of interest to keep me coming back.
The only problem for Charlie is trying to keep up with the levels of dystopia in the real world. Very difficult to be shocking when every day brings some new jaw dropping development.
What I think Black Mirror does best when it really works is not just identifying the dystopia, but how people respond to it emotionally. I think that is something this season has nailed in a few episodes in a way I dont think it has for several seasons.
John Hamm has a new one on Apple called Your Friends and Neighbors about a hedge fund guy who loses his job and turns to robbing his rich friends and neighbors to get by. It was much hyped mostly due to Hamm returning to a leading man role, but its unfortunately just not very good.
I thought he dialled that back in this series (aside from the first episode). The Eulogy one was very good, because it is the sort of thing you can see happening. It reminded me a little of the episode with Jodie Whittaker, where people’s memories were recorded offline, even when they are best forgotten. In a way, Eulogy was the opposite - when those memories are tarnished or missing.
