The TV Thread redux

Episode 2 was a BIG come down. Hopefully that Tom and Jerry style sequences is something he’s got out of his system.

Re: Bill Bailey

It’s four years today since we lost Sean. I thought about him as I walked the South Downs . We walked for miles along it, as we did on so many other walks, here and all over the world. We talked about everything on these strolls, as Sean had a lively and curious mind that wanted to explore any subject under the sun. And sometimes, of course, we would just roll around on the grass laughing . I miss those walks and our conversations, and I am grateful for the many years of our friendship. Miss you old pal

Imagine watching the Wire for the first time now and getting to this episode and pulling the Wee Bay face in recognition when Wee Bay pulls the face.

Imagine having all that ahead of you.

The missus hasn’t seen it and I can’t watch it with her in case she doesn’t absolutely worship it like I do.

I had to watch it all on my own as my wife gave up after half an episode and refused point-blank to watch any more.

I honestly think a bit less of her for that :joy:

Honestly, I don’t blame her. For me, The Wire and The Leftovers are similar in the sense that I could immediately recognise the greatness of what I was watching at that particular moment - but that I couldn’t wait for it to end. They had that sort of realistic bleakness that I couldn’t block out, no matter how hard I tried.

It’s just hard to take when I then go downstairs and see her glued to Celebrity Love Island lol

In my case, it was Suits. Can’t blame her, those two guys are rather pleasing on the eye. :joy:

Haha, Suits was my guilty pleasure for a while, until Mike left anyway lol

To be fair, the first couple of episodes of the Wire aren’t easy to get into. You’re thrown into a court case and internal police department politics before you’ve got to know the characters, but once you get past that, and at the latest once Omar appears, it’s pure magic.

Her main gripes were the grittiness and the way the characters speak… and I couldn’t in all honesty tell her either one changed over time lol. For me they’re two of the big reasons to watch the show!

Just watched the first 3 episodes of Alien Earth, it is decent.

I have a friend who comes to me for recommendations and I just could not get him to watch it. He said he tried 3 or 4 times and could not get past 1 or 2 episodes. Probing a bit more we realized it was because he grew up in Cleveland (a depressing arse city very similar to Baltimore) and felt watching it was like being pulled back into something he worked to get the hell away away from.

Sucks for him that he missed out, but it’s a good marker for it delivering on its intention

The Corner is also great! I used to show it to my social work students. Khandi Alexander is out of this world.

Just seen the the new series King and Conqueror has released on iPlayer. Not seen it yet but have been looking forward to it for a while. Hopefully a fairly accurate and even handed well made adaptation.

Will comment again when I’ve got round to it
