The TV Thread redux

Heartbeat was a winner with my grandmother when she was alive, as well as my mother. As you say not at all a police series, but it was a very good high quality drama series to be fair, of the " completely harmless" feel-good type. I will admit to having seen more than a few episodes myself, but not every episode like my grandmother, haha.

I am considering starting to watch it now.

Just watched the episode with ‘Bob’. Forgotten how funny it was, right up there with the likes of Fawlty Towers and OFAH for me.

The script could have been better. Love triangle rather pointless. The end came rather abruptly. But I did enjoy it a great deal, a good workout for my nascent German, and it is a story that has not been often told.

Been watching the Apple series The Long way Up.

Really dissapoining. I like the previous ones (Long way down/around) but this series was a total mess.

The first few episodes was all about electric bikes and the challenges. Most of the episodes was them running out of electric. How they won’t cheat. Very little of it was about them actually travelling and meeting people. All about them being the first to travel by electric bike through south America.

Half way through the series they are traveling by petrol bike, plane, and by the last episode. Half the episode is them doing up an old bus to travel through Mexico.

Not because of the limitations of the bike, but because apparently Mexico and other south American countries are too dangerous for them to travel by bike.

What made the last couple of series was meeting people, strange and unusual experiences and sites. It could just about be made up for it if they had actually traveled by electric the whole way. Instead it feels like a whole lot of nothing.

Didn’t meet the people, didn’t travel all the way by electric bike. Became a series more about finding chargers, getting stuck at the boarder, and project managing fixing up an old bus.

Loved this, thanks for the recommendation! Short and perfect, brilliant acting and story line and love chess so liked it even more, given hadn’t played myself for a while now. Although it doesn’t seem someone who don’t play chess won’t like it.

Fargo just finished its 4th season. It lacks the dark comedy of the previous seasons and film, but still reliably good tv. This season is about conflict between different ethic organized crime groups and the rise of the Kansas City Mafia group that are the main antagonists in season 2.

Re-imagining of the Stephen King story about a super-flu pandemic that decimates humanity(but it definitely killed more than 1 in 10  )

Thank God it couldn’t possibly happen for reals.

Just finished the final episode of the second season of Mandalorian that was pending for me.

The plot twist there was
 interesting

I’m getting through a lot of series recently, I have been really impressed with some Spanish series on Netflix (that I watch in English).
La Valla, The Barrier, pretty good.
The Mess You Leave Behind, this was brilliant, well made good acting.
Now on Minions of Midas, seems ok, gives me something to do during my lonely evening.

I might get on to the Nowegian and other series I’ve got through. They aren’t as impressive as the Spanish stuff but if you need something to watch (like I do) they do the business. It is wierd starting a series season in French then having to watch the next season in English (which wsan’t even an option for the 1st season).

I have been stuck on HBO’s old platform as my ROKU tv was not able to access the new HBO Max app. That meant despite paying the same fee I was not able to get a lot of the new content HBO had been putting out as they were restricting it to only the MAX platform. Anyway, that finally resolved itself last week so I started watching the Flight Attendant and was very pleasantly surprised.

Finally just got round to watching season 1 of the Mandalorian. Binge watched it this evening.

Looking forward to watching the second season. Bit sad some of the characters won’t be involved in that one. Found some of the some of the scenes a bit flawed but plenty of good moments and each episode u felt ended somewhat strongly.

It’s actually very good Star Wars. And I am a fan, not one who appreciates newer takes on Star Wars. But this is good.

I would give it 8/10. A strong mark. But too hollywood and too little dialogue for higher marks. Then again, Star Wars have never been that deep, so there is that.

Ps. Also, unlike Cynicaloldgit, Christmas decorations suit you and Limescouse. Your avatars in any case !

I am really struggling to understand the praise. I get it if it was an average show but elicited a genuine sense of nostalgia, but I don’t even get that. Granted I still have one episode to go in the first season yet, but so far it has seemed like all the bits that point to the OT are just horribly contrived.

I have heard the second season was better, but this is mostly coming from people who enjoyed the first season way more than I am understanding why.

I can understand that. It does in many ways feel a bit of a cheesy low budget show, and yes, some of it is very contrived. I do wonder if i would have liked it as much if it wasn’t a star wars show. However, I think it is still trying to find its feet (the 8th episode starts off with a different feel to the others as it is a bit more cartoony with the conversation between the two scouts, and what happens shortly after.

I imagine it has had a positive reception because it is still better than the movies we have had since the first trilogy and gives hope that there will be better stuff to come.

Secondly, the Mandalorians have often been a favourite of star war fans (look at the love Boba Fett gets despite rarely featuring in the movies). And, partnering him with a cute baby yoda is something that would appeal to star wars geeks i guess.

Finally, I also think the casting in the show has been really good in the first season with many really well known actors popping up in most episodes. The main actor’s voice is a bit like a clint eastwood or Nathan Fillion. I liked the performances of Nick Nolte, Taiki Waititi and carl Weathers for example.

The villain who appears at the end of season one is pretty cool too.

Yeah, I get the arguments and would be willing to enjoy something that was just ok. However, to me this is like Solo. It’s got the star wars name on it, but there is very little about it that makes me watch it and feel like its star wars.

Looks like season 3 wont be out until December 21/early 22
I hope season 2 doesn’t end on a cliff hanger

It was actually Solo that led me to stop watching Star Wars movies beyond the original trilogy (I haven’t seen the most recent movie, and have no plans to see it). That was so awful.

I’d imagine Season 3 will be later than December 2021 more like 2022,i won’t give any spoilers but anyone watching season 2,you need to watch past the credits on the last episode,to see whats coming next.
