I know it will get complicated. But the first 10 episodes are alright.

Shadowfax is born free and he is basically the king of all free roaming horses.

I loved Sandman. Was worried that it would be a bit out there although Iā€™ve liked other Gaiman adaptations. I think the episodic nature of it worked well and it was nice having a couple of stand alone episodes to break things up.

Oh, and the dream of cats segment looked gorgeous. Was it partly rotoscoped? The animation looked amazing.

Oooh, seeing that Mac gif - the docuseries about the purchase of Wrexham has just started over here in the US. So far itā€™s been really well done, and while I know they are actors, both McElhenney and Reynolds comes across really well

Watching Sexy Beast again, some of those Don dialogues, just genius acting by Sir Ben.

I know Iā€™m late on this but just started The Handmaidā€™s Taleā€¦ I donā€™t think itā€™s too much of an exaggeration to say that a lot of the concepts behind the world they live in are straight out of the Republicans mouths. Obviously the costumes etc are a bit excentric but the whole forced births, women as second class citizens, blaming women for getting rapedā€¦ Weā€™ve seen all of that from the right in recent years.

Oh goodness I had to stop watching that, itā€™s too depressing.

Yeah Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™ll watch all of it. It seems very well made and acted but the story cuts too close to the bone at the moment!

@Sweeting Itā€™s important to remember that it was written in the early 80s as a commentary on Reaganā€™s America. Itā€™s been treated as the 1984 of womenā€™s issues and the dangers of the patriarchy. That is unfortunately treated as a niche issue and so was much less known than Orwellā€™s work. Until they made a tv show about it 30 years later in direct response to the acceleration of the threats Atwell described in her book.

Like you, I too had to stop watching it. The first season was definitely hard work but exceptional. And important. After that I felt it lost its center. Rather than being about the response to the oppression, it started being more and more about the oppression itself. It came to feel more like misery porn. I fought through the end of he second season and then couldnt go back for any more. They are now about to release the 5th season, and by all accounts it has just kept doubling down on the misery every since.

The Handmaidā€™s Tale: I watch seasons 1 and 2 without too much issues (depressing, yes, but there were good stories and motives by the characters)ā€¦but came S03, HBO/production company were just milking it (thatā€™s the main reason I prefer 2 seasons max for any series, as ideas are generally still fresh)ā€¦it became a struggle to slog through, but against my better judgement, I watched all the episodes (13 for S03!). S04 was even worse, there were no hope and no end to the miseries. After episode 5, I finally drew the line and stopped.

Killing Eve is another one. Season 3 was just stupid, and I donā€™t feel like watching S04.

Seems like it happens to a lot of shows, after two seasons the novelty wears off and you see the pattern of the stories. Example: You, The Last Kingdom. Great first two season then youā€™re like ā€œhavenā€™t I seen this before?ā€

Very few tv shows are put together with a real plot in mind. They are put together as a concept with maybe some rough narrative touchpoints they think they can hit. At some point you have to be able to go beyond an interesting concept and deliver a story worth telling, either in terms of plot or character arcs. If you dont start with those in mind its difficult to find them midstream. West World is as good an example I can think of. Severance as well. I know lots of people loved that, but it felt to me like an exercise of a the writers room saying to each other "fuck, how do we make 8-10 episodes out of a 1 paragraph concept?
