The Wheel of Time was very average, but I was so disappointed with Rings of Power that I am pining for it to return so I can at least have average fantasy to watch.
Longing for the return of the Witcher now. I want to see something that isn’t just badly written again. Some series where I don’t shout frustrated at the tv, cursing the director.
So please give me some quality again, such as The Foundation (really looking forward to season 2, season 1 was absolutely majestic) or something similar. Or the next Dune film (also excellent, although a bit too short, my only gripe really). That’s Sci-Fi though, but I like Sci-Fi too as a genre. And when I can’t have good fantasy, then Sci-fi will do.
Preach it ! You are so incredibly correct ! Galadriel is an attrocity, doesn’t help that she is walking sex-lust; her role does not fit at all ! It’s impossible to know if she is a good actor or not, she is cast damnably bad and inexcusably so.
Even I’m not convinced by that. No one who read any of the deeper work can take issue with it being possible We know the Maia had no true physical form and Sauron used that to hide his identity numerous times. It’s the contrivance that is problematic. And then, through these silly contrivances, they get him to where he needs to be for the rings to be made, and then they make the wrong fucking rings
Worst of all it robbed Galadriel of one of the few things explicitly written about to justify her greatness (seeing through Annatar and rejecting him).
I think it’s a decent attempt at it, and it’s not that big of a stretch for him to re-appear as Annatar and help forge the other rings… Yes it swaps the order of the forging, but Lord of the Rings had multiple tweaks which worked in the end.
The clear part is he has no hand in the forging of the elven rings which means he has no hold over them but his anger at them causes the war.
P.s. Pretty sure the Simlarils were crafted as a reflection of the brightness of .Galadriel’s hair! She was loved by Feanor somewhat, so other reasons for greatness!
I’m only half way through episode three of Rings of Power (it’s practically impossible to get my wife to agree to watch something but she’ll flip her lid if I watch it myself), seems alright so far. Certainly better than my expectation - but then again my expectation was somewhere around the Game of Thrones Season 8 level so it’s not that hard to beat.
I like the idea of slowly seeing the world of LOTR emerge through the old kingdoms and lands. I assume the Southland’s are what is going to be Mordor in future.
I’ve only got three episodes in myself. The show is visually absolutely stunning, and that’s about the only good thing I can say about it as of yet. A few of the acting performances are decent but something just feels missing. I will try to persist and get through it all despite having already had the main twist of the show spoiled for me (which doesn’t sound particularly interesting either).
I myself just started it last night, got through three episodes
without overanalyzing and comparing this to the books (which in fairness I read 30years ago and remember nearly none of the details), thus far the production itself is visually stunning and enjoyable to watch. the swimming scene with Galadriel seemed a bitch much, she’s a bit of an uppity bitch when she’s rescued and thus has got me a bit annoyed with her whole situation (be better, lady!).
We’ve rewatched it recently with our daughter, only first four seasons mind, and she enjoyed it and I enjoyed watching it again.
I think binging rather than week to week exposes a few issues with the show. Mulder seems like more of a hypocrite quite often and major events that the characters would always have a ‘week’ to recover from are now 5 minutes later, so they go from nearly dying one episode to immediately being fine and never talking about it again.
Tonally the show can be all over the place too, which again they could get away with week to week, but sometimes a bit jarring hour to hour.
Overall though, I would say try the first season and it should be fairly obvious after that if you personally think it’s worth continuing.
I was thinking the same about both X-Files and Millennium since I couldn’t watch them when I was a kid and I’ve decided to give Millennium a go - X-Files depends on whether Millennium will work for me!
